i never really liked them much until i saw them live.i only ever heard the 4-5 songs they played on the radio all the time my husbands boss had tickets and asked us too go see them in toronto.i didnt want too but it was the boss and i figured he offered and my husband liked them so the least i could do is go.
i say this with no disrespect but it was like a religious experience for me. i had never seen another performer other than eric clapton that just got up did the songs--clear and clean and spontanious.
i got drawn into it like i was the only one there. i spent the next few days finding out what some of the other songs were i had never heard.
i have 2 teens and the bands they like are classified as artistic,i guess thats what they they call it.you feel like slicing your wrists because its dark and very negative.its huge lights, screaming, and hating everyone and everything.
this guy being 18 probably figured it couldnt be good if it wasnt theatric.

Hip are great, great live performers...
I do wish for a bit more audience interaction. It's gotten better this tour, for sure...(sing alongs, getting the audience to cheer, etc)...

Well, what kind of music is the kid into? He may not have been very likely to enjoy the Hip to begin with. And even so, hard as it is to believe, it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea. I had a bit of a laugh when I was at the Minneapolis show in May...I was standing near a husband who was obviously a big fan and his disgruntled wife who just stood there with her arms folded the whole time, probably counting down the minutes until the end, heh...
Anyway, the Hip are excellent musicians and performers; even if you didn't care for their music, you certainly couldn't deny them that.

That is what he denied them. He said the music was good but the performance was poor.

I have to comment on that..
I think a lot of "new" bands walk up on stage, and perform their songs exactly like they are on their studio records. Hit every note, and appear/sound super tight because of their adherance to their studio recordings.
The Hip, Gord especially, I'll be damned if I ever hear him sing ANY song at the exact tone and pitch of the record. That and they improvise. They extend their outros and jam it up.
I think that could turn somebody off, if their vision of a good performance is how much alike it sounds to their records.

I think you've made a good point here. Some people are really turned off by a lot of impovisation during concerts and want everything to sound like it does when they listen to it at home. Pretty easy feat being that so many "popular" performers lip synch everything anyway
