I love Blow. It kicks ass. But I love Flamenco even more. Why?
Because when a band whose roots are planted so firmly in guitar-driven rock can turn out such delicately-textured, beautiful song like Flamenco, it strikes a far deeper impression on me than something common to its established domain.
Blow is exemplary of their early stride; it's hard, straightforward, and relatively simple....and believe me, I appreciate it. It is because I do appreciate Blow that I am able to be so moved by Flamenco, which is a much, much more difficult song for a dual-guitar rock outfit to pull off. So I guess my admiration for Flamenco hinges on my appreciation for its diametrical precursor.

I hear exactly what you're saying, and I think Flamenco is a tremendous song -- another fine example -- who knows, maybe the finest -- of the Hip straying from the box one might otherwise put them in and changing it up completely. It is a great tune among many great tunes.
But Blow at High Dough is an achetype of The Tragically Hip, which, in my view, does not also bear the baggage of being an almost-cliche (unlike (may God have mercy on me) NOIS or Little Bones or Courage).
And yes, everyone likes to -clasm a good icon every now and again -- and if NOIS was up against Flamenco, I might have rooted for the underdog too -- but, gawd, I like Blow at High Dough.
I would put Blow in the same camp as Hundredth Meridian and Three Pistols -- classic Hip that has not become a stale or perfunctory, whether we're talking about live or studio versions. It's the one song of the heavy hitters that I wouldn't mind hearing every single concert. And I just don't see Flamenco competing in its league. I wouldn't want to hear Flamenco every concert -- if they were inclined to go that route, I'd like to hear Flamenco some nights, Pretend on others, The Rules, The Last of the Unplucked Gems, As I Wind Down the Pines, So Hard Done By, or Throwing Off Glass -- the more subdued beauties.
But I suppose that's why we have polls and discussions, and geez what a wonderful and varied world we live in.
