My beef is that the limiting factor isn't the difficulty of the questions, but the time constraint.

I'm not talking about the test, I'm talking about IQ tests. Difficulty of the questions could not be any more irrelevant, neither could the 'time constraints.' So the only thing being measured by a non-difficult IQ test is how well you do on a non-difficult IQ test...and the only thing being measured on a time-constrained IQ test is how well you do on a time-constrained IQ test.

Pre-employment screening?? For what?? Sounds kind of like a joke to me. What job requires that you perform well on IQ tests, in this day and age? The only answer I'm going to accept without bursting into tears laughing my ass off is if it's a military position.

The thought of IQ tests as part of the job interview process, frankly, scares the shit out of me -- albeit not quite as badly as those pseudo-scientific personality tests some employers love.

I mean, seriously, what's the intent here? To screen out morons? To hire the guy who scores 131 over the guy who scores 129?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's impossible to score 151...145 is a perfect score if you are between 25-34. Unless you scored perfect when you were 11, I might have to call some bs on that one.

I'm sure you're a bright cat, but I don't think Stephen Hawking topped 150

a job as a trader with a pension fund. and yes, some form of intellignece test is quite common in the quant side of investment banking. hope that doesn't make you burst into tears laughing your ass off though

Whoa there partner, who said anything about intelligence tests? IQ tests are about as far away from measuring intelligence as you can get. At least call an IQ test an IQ test.

And I hope it isn't up to me to point out the irony of spelling 'intelligence' incorrectly. That's a pretty bad typo for a high scorer such as yourself.

- day_for_night - 03-19-2007

meh, never claimed to be a good typist. and don't care to proof posts on a message board.

and no need to parse words, you know what i meant when i said 'intelligence test'.

ohh and exactly how do you not see an IQ test as at least having some correlation with intelligence? you think an idiot is gonna score in the top 10th percentile on an IQ test? highly unlikely...the odds of guessing correctly on questions and getting a good score is astronomically small. i'm not saying they're close to perfect, but a test of a person's ability to understand grammar, mathematics, etc is at least somewhat of a barometer as to how smart they are.

i'm not saying this to justify my score and be like..."ohh look at me i'm a genius lolerz". but to say an iq test only measures a person's ability to take an iq test is nonsense.

day_for_night Wrote:ohh and exactly how do you not see an IQ test as at least having some correlation with intelligence?
Uhm, because it does not have a correlation with intelligence? I sure hope your view of intelligence isn't restricted to math and verbal skills.

day_for_night Wrote:you think an idiot is gonna score in the top 10th percentile on an IQ test?
If an idiot is someone who does well on IQ tests, then yes I expect an idiot to score in the blah blah percentile on an IQ test. It has nothing to do with guessing correctly, and everything to do with a person who does well on IQ tests doing well on IQ tests.

You meant to say, "a test of a person's ability to understand grammar, mathematics, etc is at least somewhat of a barometer as to how well they understand grammar, mathematics, etc." So I have up to Calc 3, and took some other math courses so far in my university career. Now put me, and a mechanic who dropped out of high school, next to a broken down car. Guess which one of us is the genius, and which one of us is the tool. Now imagine your every day life as being littered with hundreds of these types of situations. Maybe you can see that when I encounter a statement that claims an IQ test is more than an IQ test, my bullshit radar goes off.

Ok? Well, hit me with the stats then.

It was one of those quasi-legit online ones. I doubt it's real. My IQ tests have generally been between 130-135 and the CBC one followed suit.

Doesn't IQ stand for Intelligence Quotient?

You know what's weird? I scored the same as you (54/60) but because I'm between 35-44 years old, my IQ is 133. Does that mean that over the last 4 yrs, I became one IQ point dumber? Earlier IQ tests have always placed me between 130-135, so I guess it was pretty accurate.

Quote:137, most of those questions were far easier than you see on a normal iq test, the vocab was a joke. the only annoying thing was the time factor.

I agree, day_for_night. I could have easily scored perfect if I had the freedom to use my test time effectively. I didn't need 20-30 seconds to do the math and language questions but I could have used more time on the perception diagrams. If I was taking a real IQ test, I could have burned through the easy stuff and spent more time on the challenging stuff.

That sounds a bit boastful, doesn't it?

IQ is Intelligence Quotient, which is calculated as the quotient of your score divided by the score of your peers. (*100%)

So according to that, the avg score for between 25-34 years is 40.3/60 and for 35-44 is 40.6/60.

That just means that your peers got smarter. Not that you got dumber.
