It's been bad enough here this week that Canada Post issued a press release reminding people to shovel their sidewalks.

As for being dumb lumps, yeah - absolutely. But I don't want to be the only guy using the weather as an excuse for not coming in. Especially when I'm the boss. :wink:

Here in Ontario, we have time to shovel our sidewalks, because we don't go to work.

I mean, there's only so many hours in the day.

On second thought, your numbers are probably correct. In my opinion, Environment Canada is a much better source than <a class="postlink" href="http://www.theweathernetwork.com">www.theweathernetwork.com</a> ... they're just a bunch of hacks anyway.

I wouldn't have gone in today, but I had to go to a funeral of a former co-worker. Sad isn't it? A funeral on Valentines Day? Anyway, I got up early and left 30mins early to get to work and I still got to work at the same time as normal. The sideroads sucked, but the highway was great. It was clear sailing.

Good point... having moved here from the tropics of Southern Ontario six years ago, I have to say that few people in Calgary have a clue what a snow shovel is, and even fewer ever use it. Maybe this condition is confined just to the south end of town, but it seems that many folk adopt a snow removal policy strategy similar to that of the city - i.e. wait for a chinook to melt it.

Case in point. On Monday I'm shovelling out our drive, when our neighbour walks out to her car and asks why I'm shovelling. In my head I'm thinking "well you daft biatch, the foot of snow surrounding my car might have something to do with it..." But she continues in this know-it-all tone - "The weather network says it'll be ten degrees on Wednesday, so all this will be melted." She then hops in her car (complete with little homo Flames flag) and drives off.

Now I'm thinking... strike one - she's a Flames fan. Strike two - she believes the Weather Network. How can this get any better? Answer: I threw the snow from my drive onto hers.

I got home from work this morning around 0800 and saw her out trying to brush off her car, trudging through snow that's deeper than her bar boots, freezing her ass off, and said "Pretty warm out today, eh?" Don't think she appreciated the jab.

Anyway, where was I going with this? Oh yeah. Ontarians are too lazy to go to work, Calgarians are too lazy to shovel, and I actually miss the sound of a snowplow going by on my street at 0400, even if I know it means I have to get up earlier to dig my car out.

Actually, few people in this particular southern Ont suburb understand the function and use of a snow shovel, either. They clear their driveways with the old snowblower, but leave the snow on the sidewalk for the letter carrier to trudge through until the next thaw.

People who drive everywhere don't see a need to clear the sidewalk, I guess, which is a pain in the ass for those of us who do a lot of walking.

One of my pet peeves.

By the way, how are you enjoying your nice warm, above-zero temperatures there in the arctic today, while we in the tropics suffer at minus 20? Smile

It's spectacular! Thanks for asking. Now the wait at the bus stop this morning won't be as unbearable as it has been for the rest of the week. There are few things in my life as annoying as standing outside waiting for a bus when it's -25 and the bus is 30 minutes late while my wife drives to work in the Volvo XC70, with heated seats, etc etc etc. It's these types of weeks where I come close to breaking down and getting a 2nd car. Must.....resist....oh wait, 1.8% financing on Audi A4's?!? Hmmmmmm. No, no......must....resist.

Damn fine! Thanks for asking. I'm thinking of wearing shorts today. With the melting snow pooling on lawns and roads, I might as well go swimming.

My mom left me a rather nasty message on my machine after watching the national weather this morning. Just for that, I'm putting her in a home that doesn't shovel their walk. Wink
