After days of constant listenng:

I agree with those who point out that In View is probably the weakest track on the album, but not necessarily the worst choice for radio. It will be interesting to see what the reaction of folks drawn by In View will be to the album as a whole.

Where this record will rank in relation to other Hip records remains to be seen, but for me it's their most consistently great album....beginning to end.

I think they all brought their game faces in for this one, but the guy, for me, who really stepped it up was Johnny Fay. Absolutely love the way he holds the whole thing together.

Finally to have absorbed so many influences and to have produced something at once so different and yet, at the same time, so unmistakenly Hip is no small feat. Gotta hand it to them.....big time. Well done, boys!

if we are starting an album off then

Looking for a Place to Happen, At the Hundredth Meridian and Wheat Kings

my bad...I saw trifecta and went with that. I failed to notice that it was regarding album closers.

no – yer good it for it allowed me to get away with posting my fav three at the start of an album - which flow (one album later) from my fav. three ending songs

World Container
Drop Off
In view
The Lonely End of the Rink
Fly
Yer Not the Ocean
Family Band
Luv (sic)
Last Night I Dreamed You Didn't

- Billy - 10-14-2006

I've been playing the album in heavy rotation since the first day it streamed, and I had my "choked up" moment today. I was out in the off leash park with me dog, listening to the album WC, and all of a sudden I had this wave of emotion that hit me during the song WC. To premise it, during the whole album I was reminiscing on different Hip moments I've had over the past 18 years and really thinking about how much this band has meant to me and how they have always been right there with me at the forefront. Then WC the song comes on and blammo, I get all teary eyed.

Ok, sappy moment over, this album is killer! At first I really dug it, then I thought, meh, it's ok. Now I'm thinking it's the band in peak form and there isn't a weak song on it...they're all potential singles in my books. I'm fucking stoked to be hearing some of them in a few weeks. I'm hoping Fly will be the next single...it's just too good not to be a single. I think Family Band is going to rip the roof off any joint where it's played.

This is a really cool album.

its really interesting to chart how unrecognisable this album is from something more along the lines of RA. I know its band evolution, but where the hell did it come from? its even pretty different from In Between Evolution.

Of course, this is not a criticism, i still love the album (much more than IBE)

- Daryl24 - 10-15-2006

gonna finally take a stab at ranking wc songs...

IMO:

kids
luv(sic)
rink
FB
oceans
drop-off
fly
WC
LNIDYDLM
pretend
IV

I think Rink-Fly-Luv(sic) is one of the best Hip trifectas ever. I cant wait to get this album into my iPod and play the shit out of it, I just love it.

- thesellout - 10-15-2006

alright, here goes the ranking:

Rink
Ocean
Luv (sic)
Fly
The Kids Don't Get IT
Last Night
Family Band
The Drop Off
World Container
Pretend
In View

Overall, i think Pretend and World Container (especially WC) would have worked so much better as completely acoustic songs, but whatever, its all good

That'll be Bob Rock's influence surely? So much for him killing off the band - sounds to me like he's really done so great work with them here as this album sounds fucking fantsatic.

sundin13 Wrote:Another spot-the-influence query -- does any one else think the catchy guitar riff in Luv (sic) sounds like Unforgettable Fire-era U2?

Speaking of influences... I think the opening to "Kids" sounds a lot like something off of Our Lady Peace's latest... I think "The World On A String" but not sure... makes sense with Bob Rock being the producer.

And yes, I thought the same thing about Arcade Fire. Don't be hating on Arcade Fire.

I agree 100%. After hearing the entire record, I was a bit relieved to gain some insight into HOW it could "fit", yet the context doesn't help me appreciate the song any.

tigerthelion Wrote:It is probably the best song for radio though, if that means anything.

Agreed, but that only reinforces my perspective that it's a weak Tragically Hip tune.

I still don't understand this viewpoint. To me, the verse leading up to "I lose, things change, but never in your eyes," is the single greatest moment of World Container. That's just a stupid American's opinion, though.

I also love Kids.
And I also think Family Band is the strongest song on the album.
