I'll look for you. We can rock out together... LOL! (Remember, bad haircuts always grow out).
If you're planning to rock out with Hugh, eat your Wheaties first.

The 22nd is the start of the Easter long weekend, so I'm definitely in for the MIchigan show and most likely the Chicago show. I wonder what these shows are going to be like? Can't wait to hear Julie's stuff too.

I've seen Julie at Lincoln Hall before, maybe a year ago with RAA (weird combo, I thought), and it was a really good set. I think there were just two of them playing acoustic, but there may have also been a drummer; it was my first time seeing her, and I was totally charmed. I figure this show will be pretty similar, except with bonus Gord. Lincoln Hall is nice and new, maybe 500 capacity, with a bar in the front part of the building. There's a small balcony with a few tables and chairs, but you have to get there pretty early if you want a seat (I usually don't). Sound's good, staff's awesome, beer's not great, they have half-price mac & cheese on Wednesdays, and during playoffs they set up a projector and show me hockey. I... spend a lot of time at Lincoln Hall.

And that is a good point about Easter! Maybe I'll try to figure out how to get to Ferndale. Hrm.

Bought my ticket for Ferndale! The Magic Bag is one of my favorite venues ever so I basically want to hug whoever scheduled this show.

I have yet to attend a show at the Magic Bag in my two Windsor years, so I'm glad to hear it's a nice venue. Looks like there'll be a decent Hipbase contingent!

I'm looking forward to hanging out with everyone and jamming to Gord and Julie. We"ll have fun!

Very excited to hear The Hip are writing and will likely tour also.

Okay, I'm in for Michigan! Is it April yet?

Re: Downie Tour Dates - HandsInTheRiver41 - 01-19-2011

Wow, Gord Downie has been announced as one of the artists performing at Coachella this year. That will be some pretty good American publicity for him, although he'll undoubtedly be relegated to one of the tiny sidestages.

Ummm, is anyone else extremely pissed and distressed over The Pixies playing at The Fox Theater in Detroit the SAME night Gord's playing in Ferndale? :'(

Re: Downie Tour Dates - Hugh23 - 01-21-2011

Advice for those travelling to Ferndale, MI for Gord's solo show at the Magic Bag:

I am a firefighter/paramedic for the city of Royal Oak. Royal Oak is the city just north of Ferndale. Ferndale borders the city of Detroit. Eminem's infamous "8 Mile Rd" is the borderline between Ferndale and Detroit. The Magic Bag is located on Woodward Ave just north of 9 Mile Rd. Woodward Ave was known for muscle cars and drag racing in the 50's, 60's & 70's. Take Woodward Ave south and you will travel through the heart of Detroit all the way to the Detroit River where you can see Windsor, Ontario. Take Woodward Ave north and you will travel through some of the richest neighborhoods in the US. The "Mile Roads" travel East/West and are spaced 1 mile apart (eg; 8 Mile, 9 Mile, 10 Mile...etc.). Woodward Ave runs on a diagonal in the NW/SE direction.

For those of you seeking hotel/motel accomodations, my suggestion is to not stay at any motels on Woodward Ave or 8 Mile Rd. The majority are very seedy and run down with questionable clientel. The only hotel on Woodward I would possibly recommend with reasonable rates is the Travelodge at 30776 Woodward Ave, Royal Oak. It is just south of 13 Mile Rd. Hotels located on Woodward Ave in Birmingham & West Bloomfield, MI are very nice, but pricey. (These are the more weathly suburbs I mentioned earlier). Your best bet is to do a hotel search for the cities of Madison Heights & Troy, MI. You will find some good choices with reasonable prices. Be sure to use MapQuest to find out the distance between your hotel choice and the Magic Bag. Don't leave your cell phone, GPS, computer or any other valuables visible in your car's interior or you could be the victim of a "smash & grab".

Royal Oak & Ferndale are known in the Detroit area for their entertainment choices. There are many cool bars and restaurants close to the Magic Bag on Woodward & 9 Mile Rd. Royal Oak has literally over 100 bars, restaurants and unique retailers in a small walkable downtown area. On Fridays and Saturdays in the spring/summer there are thousands of 20 & 30 somethings in downtown Royal Oak patronizing the bars, restaurants and shops. There are some really cool stores to find unique clothing, jewelry and shoes that you won't find in the big box retailers. Both Ferndale & Royal Oak are safe with the police very visible. Don't drink and drive anywhere in this surrounding area. Use a desginated driver. Parking enforcement is very strict in Ferndale & Royal Oak. Feed the meters or use the parking structures or lots.

There is a very stable GLBT population in Ferndale & Royal Oak. It is estimated that 20% of the population in both cities is GLBT. They own homes and businesses in the area and Ferndale is currently building a $2 million GLBT community center with city funds. Be tolerant and kind to others. With the information I just gave you, everyone coming to this show should have a great time. The Magic Bag is very small. Their website states a standing room capacity of 300. Even the person in the back will have a clear view of Gord's features...See you there!

Thanks for the lowdown on the area Hugh, that's awesome! Can't wait for the show.

Just got tix for Michigan! Yahoo!!!

Re: Downie Tour Dates - lonesomehobo - 01-29-2011

The March 1 show is apparently the Verge Music Awards, and Gord will be playing along with some other bands. This is significantly less good than a full Gord show.
