skippy the wonder dog Wrote:BC is always weird.

Think of the history of scandals at the provincial level in BC. Svend Robinson is running. Grewal. And these two latest clowns.

fingernailsonhull Wrote:How could I forget about Svend? I also didn't realize that Gurmant Grewal was from BC. That's just bizarre.

Too much marijuana out there, perhaps?

The weirdest part about the statements by the NDP candidate, Jeffery Hansen-Carlson, regarding David Oliver was that during the meeting where Hansen-Carlson was allegedly bribed, he was offered a KFC dinner but turned it down. A Kentucky Fried Chicken dinner??? Were they all high and just had the munchies, or are the Liberal candidates out there so short of funds they can't even make bribe offers at a half-decent restaurant? Confusedcratch: Man, sometimes truth IS stranger than fiction!

KFC?? Big Grin Big Grin Smile  Tongue    That's gold, pure gold! :thumb:

Skippy, as arguably the most politically astute person at this forum, what do you think went so wrong for the Liberals?

Welcome back, cfern. Has it been a month already?

even if it hasn't, i think he has more than made good on his bet.

That's arguably the question most likely to provoke argument. I'm not certain it's safe to respond. Smile

I have to say I don't know.

For whatever SES's daily tracking poll is worth, there was no real movement in the polls until after Christmas, when the Conservatives took off. The Liberal strategy of lying low early on doesn't seem to have hurt them so much as their floundering after Christmas.

I think people are just fed up, and Martin isn't offering anything new. Meanwhile Harper has been doing his best impression of a human being, promising not to cut social programs and so on. His communications team finally got something right -- the "time for a change" message seems to have struck the right chord. The funny thing there is that the Liberals' economic record is good, so just why is it time for a change?

If you look back, Trudeau ruled forever, wore out his welcome, and his successor was blown to bits by Mulroney. Mulroney ruled forever, wore out his welcome, and his successor was blown to bits by Chrétien. Chrétien ruled forever, wore out his welcome ... and his successor won a minority government only because the public found the alternative so obnoxious.

Harper managed to make himself less obnoxious than usual, while Martin has failed to step up as the man with a plan. So Martin is being taken out by the delayed Chrétien backlash: the sense that the King is dead, rot his soul, and it's time to change tack.

Martin's worst campaign mistake, I think, has been sending the message "stop Harper," instead of "vote for Paul Martin's program." He needed to offer a change of tack, and he didn't.

Who can argue with that, Skippy? Not me. I think you're absolutely right on your take re. the increase in voter support for the Conservatives. Canadians seem to be suffering 'Liberal fatigue' and Harper doesn't look quite as much like a minion of Satan this time around.

I"m afraid Harper isn't enough of a statesman to keep his party together though. I could be wrong, but the same-sex marriage thing is going to dog him like dogged thing.

Thanks guys. When I would visit and read some posts it took every bit of my willpower not to break the bet! It's tough to be an opinionated jackass like me but be banned from my favourite forum!

Well all, the polls open in Ontario in 8.5 hrs. Everyone ready to mark that X? Unfortunately, I'll miss out on all the election talk tomorrow as I am working at a polling station. It's been a long campaign. My respect to all of those who volunteered on campaigns or are somehow involved in the election. Even if I disagree with you, I have immense respect for those who consider it their duty to educate themselves and get involved. Good luck today.

- sean.bonner - 01-23-2006

Just for all you people out west who legally aren't aloud to get results from the rest of the country until your polling stations are closed... out here (maritimes) this is the down low. These numbers are a combination of elects/leads.
Lib: 19
Con: 10
NDP: 3

This was the dl last election for the maritimes:

Lib: 22
Con: 7
NDP: 3

you guys can figure out the spread.

i'm getting the results as they happen over the wire at work, and it's really tough not to mentnion anything on-air!!

- sean.bonner - 01-23-2006

Fantastic! Re-opening the same sex marriage debate is gonna be awesome. And I can't wait to send our troops to Iraq!

(sarcasm x2)

After the whole WMD thing turned out to be bogus, Harper said he was glad we did not go to Iraq and has no plans to send our troops there. I guess the Liberal pundits forget to point out things like that.

That doesn't change the fact that we'd be there if he was PM two years ago... I'm pretty sure thats the intended message...

Either way, I'm happy with the results of the election. Stephen Harper has been given his chance, and I while I do not agree with a lot of the Conservative policy, and personally am nauseated by Stephen Harper himself, I am glad that the Liberals, once again, defied the polls and showed that Canadians still have faith in the values and accomplishments of the Liberal party (and I'm sure a certain amount of folks who voted Conservative do to, but felt obligated to punish the party)

It's going to be interesting for the next few months...

As it stands, the Conservative/NDP alliance won't hold the Government...

Does anybody foresee a Liberal crossing the floor? And if so, how long will a Conservative/NDP Government hold? This minority Government is ridiculously more fragile than the last, and I expect it to last half as long...

It's too bad Paul Martin won't run for Liberal leadership again... I'll miss the guy...
