Wow, people in Montreal rioting after the first round. A little premature for that isn't it?
On another note what a comeback by the Caps last night. Hopefully they can keep up the momentum going into game 7.

What got people pissed off at Cherry was his remark after game 2 that "Montreal has the referees in their pocket."
The guy's a dolt. His rant last night about "when you're with someone, you're with someone" was the proof: he hasn't been with the Bruins since he was fired in 1979 after getting beat by Montreal. He's with the CBC now: as a talking head, it's one thing when he wears Boston's colours, but suggesting the Habs bought off the refs is over the line. Whatever credibility he had, he blew with that remark.
Bob Cole isn't doing too much for CBC's credibility these days, either. He likes to frame the action with some kind of dramatic narrative, like underdogs-make-good or, more recently, hot-rookie-saves-the-day. It'd be nice if he'd just call the game as it's actually played.

I think we could replace the word "hockey" with "life".
I can understand and appreciate all of the bitching and moaning about HNIC, and Cherry in general, but you guys do recognize that it is his job to get a reaction, right? I'm willing to bet he doesn't even believe 90% of what comes out of his mouth. It's theatre.
I remember years ago when he used to always butcher Jagr's name, and talk about what a diver he was, etc, during HNIC broadcasts. Then I happened to be in the States one weekend and was watching a Devils/Pens game being broadcast on MSG when they had Cherry on during the second intermission, and he pronounced Jagr's name perfectly, and went on and on about what a phenomenal player he is. Cherry's act is a schtick, plain and simple.

I loved when he went on about his "first place finishes" and his coach of the year award, etc. Now, I'm not gonna knock him completely as a coach, because it takes a someone special to coach superstars, but come on... he had Bobby Orr, P.Esposito, Gery Cheevers, etc, etc. Those guys possibly could have coached themselves at times!
He hates Montreal because they always beat him... including his infamous gaff where he had too many players on the ice, and Lafleur took over. Quit living in the past Don.

The Hockey Night in Canada telecast of the San Jose Sharks-Calgary Flames game last Sunday was weak in spots, but helpful in identifying some of the show's problems.
Let's start with host Ron MacLean, an excellent broadcaster and a popular hockey personality.
On a semi-regular basis, MacLean uses "hell of a" to describe something exceptional, such as "a helluva third period." He uttered "helluva" once on Sunday.
Last week, he used damn and hell in the same breath.
They're minor expletives, but CBC Sports is the only place we know where a host is allowed to swear on the air.
Can you imagine Peter Mansbridge announcing on the CBC's The National, "There was one hell of an earthquake in Pakistan yesterday."
And then there's P.J. Stock, a Montreal radio personality and former NHL player. Hockey Night is working hard to make Stock a star, and clearly it is working, at least in P.J.'s mind.
He's relatively new to TV, but we know of no other broadcaster so obviously pleased with himself on the air.
One journalist we talked to likened him to "a bar disc jockey — no sense that he isn't the show."
In the playoffs, Hockey Night has Stock reporting the out-of-town scores, but, of course, that minor assignment is hardly enough to contain his talent.
On Sunday, he approved of the suit worn by analyst Kelly Hrudey and gave thumbs-up to his analysis, which undoubtedly topped off Hrudey's perfect day.
He talks, or yells, at a quick pace, sometimes making sense, but not often. On Sunday, he tossed out this gem, "Personally, and it's not my opinion, but I think …" In Stock's substance-free zone, that's about as good as it gets.
Ottawa analyst Garry Galley has received work on Hockey Night this spring and his commentary on Sunday was fine. But, with Galley you never know when he might drop a bomb on the English language. Last week, he offered these two double-negatives during the same telecast: "He can't do that no more," and "There isn't nothing wrong with those hands."
And, finally, reporter Cassie Campbell continues to ask leading questions. Her work would be acceptable for someone at a local station, but not for network television.
MacLean's swearing, Galley's bad grammar, Campbell's inexperience and Stock's inanities are consistent with the theory that Hockey Night has been dumbed down.

They need new music. After 40 minutes, and any other time during th game, the music puts me asleep. I am not a big fan of fox, but during the baseball playoffs fox plays an actual song. CBC should do that.
