For sure, we need us a Nolan or Nieuwendyk!!

With respect to the coaching...Now that I have calmed down... it occurs to me that maybe it was time afor a coaching change after all. I mean, the Senators have been immensely successful, perhaps the most successful of any young team in the NHL over the past five years. We have had three division titles and a President's Trophy in the past half-decade, and the team is almost always one of the top seeds going into the playoffs. And yet, we've only made it past the second round once. After years of this, time and again losing in the first and second rounds, last year was a real breath of fresh air for management. But now, back to the ways of old, I can understand perfectly why management would want to drop Martin. He was a hugely successful coach and, in my humble opinion, a good man I respected. I met him once and he seemed to have more of a genuine enthusiasm from being around fans of the game than almost anybody I've ever met.

But, with respect to the ongoing playoff troubles, maybe management felt it was just time. Although I think we should have changed goalies for a season before firing Martin, I am now of a cooler head and I am ready to see how things go. It'll be interesting to see who they pick, since no great coaches are available at the moment. That's one of the other reasons I was disappointed with the outcome: there are not currently any obvious choices to replace him. If Hartley or Quenneville or Tortorella were up for grabs, maybe the timing would be better.

yeah they do need players like that, but were not givin em up!!!

and didnt quenneville get fired before the playoffs? he is available i believe

- grooveless touque - 04-23-2004

Hmm...you could be right...actualy, he must be available because somebody on TSN was talking about how he should have been selected to coach a Team Canada somewhere in some tournament since he no longer had commitments to the Blues but he wasn't asked.

i bet thats why martin got fired so quickly, to get a jump on trying to get quinneville

that wouldnt surprise me one bit

- grooveless touque - 04-23-2004

That had better be the case. God help us if we get Ftorek or Larry Robinson or Mike Keenan. I'd permanently retire my jersey.

It's possible, but with Quenneville tied up with the WC team for the next few weeks, I don't think dismissing JM at this point in time would be for any other reason than to give some blood to the sharks currently circling the Sens' post-playoff corpses...change for the sake of change, as it were...

That said, Quenneville is a good coach, but considering the team he had in St. Louis the past few seasons (which was very similar in composition to the Sens, albeit a little older and slower) and his playoff record there, he may not be the answer in Ottawa. Plus, with his past accomplishments (he won the Jack Adams, if memory serves), he likely wouldn't come cheap...

I still think the Sens best option is Maurice...or, barring that, if the Canucks sweep clean, Marc Crawford would also be a good fit...

Oh, and grooveless (just to rub salt in the wound a little :winkSmile, the Toronto Sun had a great article on Niewy yesterday in which he stated that last summer, the market was so quiet that he jumped at the first decent offer he received (ie. from the Leafs)...In other words, Muckler COULD have had him...

But of course, now we know it was all Martin's fault they lost, right?

Of course, back when Joe signed with the Leafs, they desperately needed some roster padding, whereas the Sens thought thy had the young and vital core needed to sustain themselves in a playoff run. It wasn't until this year's thus-far useless acquisitions of Bondra and deVries that my team's management decided the time was right for bolstering the young crew with a couple of veterans.

I say ditch deVries. Once we get a better goalie, we won't need him. Heck, even Prusek, admittedly a bit inconsistent, would me a major plus in nets. He did, after all, start over 25 games and won almost three times as many as he lost. Hell, he had every game but two over .500 the Senators had this season. Lalime was much worse and if we'd had Prusek all season long, I have no doubt we'd have been division title winners again. So deVries is just a deadweight on the roster. I say give Bondra one more chance, since he is the idol of at least a couple of Senators forwards and there could potentially be some great chemistry there. Bondra did not earn the trade he was given, but he could still make waves if he finds his flow with the team next year.

It has already been mentioned a couple of times that Lalime might not be on his way out. A couple of pundits have suggested that, since Muckler has not even addresses Lalime in the media, he might just settle for a coaching change this year. If that happens, I'm rushing out to buy a Flames jersey in protest. Some of the potential coaching decisions might be a little controversial, but at the very least I would wait and see what happens. If, however, the one player on the ice who made the other 20 look redundant (since he lost the games himself) is not FIRED, I will not allow myself to cheer for the Senators until he's gone.

I like the Wings...I think they'll have more trouble with Nashville, or Calgary (possibly in the second round) then top seeded opponents.

Just thought that deserved a bump after the Leafs are now down 2-0.

i think robinson would be a good fit...all theyoung defencemen ottawa has could learn the tricks of the trade...robinson is reknowned for his work with young prospects & turning them into solid pros

That win yesterday afternoon sent me into a beer soaked sunny afternoon good time that led on well into the evening. :thumb: 17th Ave. was crazy again yesterday, the whole town was for that matter. Driving around town you see people standing on the side fo the roads with flames flags and signs, cars honking and people chanting and cheering everywhere. It's taken over.

Can't wait for game 6 tomorrow night at the dome. I'd kill to get tickets to that. Not looking too good so far for that happening.

Anyone remember when Clint Malarchuk took a skate to the Jugular vein in 89 ? I found this pic in one of my old sports mags I saved from way back when , I have no scanner so I took a pic with the webcam . He was ok and was back in the playoffs, but he wore a neck gaurd the rest of his career.
