Call for Hip-related essays/writing.

Some of what's been posted already would probably fit nicely.

As someone has already mentioned more then once, I was totally gutted when I heard the news on the radio Tuesday morning.

Buda from Buffalo. Many B&P's years ago, still have them all.
How you doing young man? I am pretty sure 75% of my collection is B&P's.
I'm doing well, hope you are too. Sure has been a long time. Julie and I saw our last Hip show in Ashevile NC in 2004. We were at the bands feet that night, the place was small. After that, they didn't come down this way anymore. Then years go by with the birth of our daughter and a lousy few years of family members passing, life was a little crazy. Things have settled down, so to hear about Gord is like tearing a scab off a wound that was almost healed. If you still live in Buffalo, we should finally meet in pe over some good beer..

I come here lots, never post much.

Mostly I come for the live stuff, its kept the fire lit for so long . . .each little variance . . . a treasure. I'll never be able to repay those who've taken the time to record and post and share the beauty that those of us in the hinterlands so rarely got to see in the flesh . . .
ever since the news came down, i haven't been able to get flamenco out of my mind

"walk like a matador, don't be chicken shit and turn breezes into rivulets. Flamenco sweep the air, and weave the sun and stamp your feet for everyone"

right there, is everything you'll ever need to know about anything, and about Gord as well.

this tour isn't for him, its for us.

the matador out there once more . . . facing the bull . . . for us.

what a beautiful human, we should all aspire to be so good.

I've been sending a few emails to anybody who will listen at CBC to have the Kingston show broadcast live. It's all I can do.

Not sure if this had been posted yet, but here is a great write up by Ron MacLean.

Don't kid yerself, the CBC and other outlets will be all over this. It's the band's call, so best to direct yer efforts towards band management.

Lovely message from Jim Bryson on Facebook:

"In 2009, I toured as a keyboard player in the Tragically Hip. Everyone in the band and organization treated me like gold from day one. So many laughs, so many adventures and just about 100 shows (94 I think).
I spent a lot of time with Gord Downie that year. We went to galleries, lunches, walks and did a whole lot of talking. He taught me valuable lessons and listened and exchanged. (He also told me how to own the gold level floor in the Fairmont's so I could get free coffee when staying there).
He now writes ever year on February 6th to wish my daughter Ursula a happy birthday as they share that day.
I will not, as Gord warned on many occasions "explain this all away".
I love that guy and all the people in that family.
Hugs and hearts to you all in this very difficult time.
Much love
j"

Im sure there's lots of people out there with similar stories about Gord, he was that kind of guy. Myself included, I wrote a short story piece about a life experience involving the band's music once and someone passed it on to Gord (without me knowing) and Gord replied back: thanks for the story, well written I enjoyed it. I was blown away, for him to say that was special to me and Ill never forget it.

I was lucky enough to meet him once at a poetry reading he was doing at the National Library in Ottawa. Afterwards he hung around to mingle with fans. We stood in a long line to meet him, and by the time we got up to him he could have easily just signed our stuff, shook our hands, and quickly moved on to the next person. But he didn't. I was in Journalism school at the time, and I mentioned to him that I had just written an article about the Hip in my campus newspaper. Suddenly he started asking me all these questions about journalism and the program I was enrolled in. I was thinking, this guy's a freakin' rock star, and he's more interested in hearing about me? I was blown away. He couldn't have been more gracious and down to earth. I had accidentally left my copy of Coke Machine Glow at home, so the only thing I had for him to sign was a copy of the event program. He signed it: "Gord Downie, in conversation with Casey." What a guy.

A rock star but a genuine human being as well, thanks for sharing that.

I make a point of watching One Week once a year or so and I saw it again today on a flight back from Quito to Toronto. It's one of my favourite movies and Gord's cameo is just icing. I was so moved by that clip it was hard to keep it together and was very close to losing it. If you haven't seen it you owe it to yourself to do so. Gord, a biker, and Ben Tyler, a young Toronto teacher recently diagnosed with cancer, have a chance encounter in a hotel parking lot somewhere in northern Ontario.

Biker: That your Norton?
Ben: Yeah
Biker: Where ya headed?
Ben: West
Biker: Anywhere west in particular?
Ben: Not yet
Biker: So, you've got direction but not ... destination (finishes rolling joint)
Ben: Ya, that about sums it up
Biker: (lights joint) You know marijuana has been medically approved for cancer patients?
Ben: What are you some kind of psychic?
Biker: No ...
Ben: Then why did you bring up Cancer?
Biker: I had an asshole full of it once
Ben: You got the treatment?
Biker: Actually, it went away on its own
Ben: Seriously!?
Biker: I'm just shitn' you man, I got treatment

The scene goes on for a little bit and the entire clip is about 3 minutes but it was hard to watch. The film (2008) is actually very uplifting, at least to me, and deals the the subject matter that has been discussed so much over the past few days on this board. The score is also outstanding with music from Joel Plaskett, Wintersleep, Stars, and Sammy among other great Canadian artists. I hope you get a chance to see it.
