There's some misses, but I really enjoy this compilation of covers. What I particularly found interesting is that there were a few covers that I really liked which were songs that I wasn't a huge fan of the Hip's version. Not that I disliked the original versions, just songs that I didn't seem to connect with before and found myself hearing the words in a new way.

Three examples of this for me were:
Vapour Trails
Honey, Please
Now for Plan A (combining this with Stay, a song I did love before, was amazing)

don't left click or tap on it. Right click only, save as. use Chrome for your browser (like the poster above ^ just said). Hope it works for you now.

Re: Strombo Presents: The Hip 30 - NegPhil - 01-05-2017

I finally had the time to listen to the show. Loved it. It's funny how some of the songs lyrics jumped out at me as if it were my first time ever listening to them. Vampires? Seriously, I never picked that up before. Strombo nailed it!

A couple of points - This was not a live recording nor was it a single event prerecorded - it was a variety of different sessions with bands recorded and videoed. I saw the Rheostatics recording on October 6 2016 in front of George's place - They did an acoustic and an electric run through of BobC of which the first was the best - it was 100% spot on and took my breath away but it wasn't recorded. They did a set of 7 songs
1. Bobcaygeon
2. Northern Wish
3. Bad Time To Be Poor
4. Dope Fiends and Boozehounds
5. My First Rock Concert
6. Saskatchewan
7. Bobcaygeon 2nd take
The second take was the one used as the first of the official set was botched more than the second. The band was Martin Tielli, Dave Bidini, Tim Vesely, Kevin Hearn on Accordian and Hugh Marsh on violin.

I have photos here which I think anyone can see

I also took this picture which I took because of the hat not realizing it was Billy Ray standing beside me

Re: Strombo Presents: The Hip 30 - potsie - 01-07-2017

The Golden Globe Awards are being held tomorrow so in recognition of that I thought I’d hand out the “Gordon Globe” Awards which honour (and shame) the best and worst in Hip cover songs as heard on the Strombo Show.

Best (Worst) Mangling of Lyrics
1. Harrison + Friends, “Poets”: “Getting retreat from the heat in the frozen food section”. This is a great flub because subbing “retreat” for “reprieve” actually works well.
2. D-Sisive, “Killerwhaletank”: “Bartholomew was livid”. The true lyric is clearly: “Bartholomew w-was LIVID!” The anger in Gord’s voice when he spits this word is incredible and if you are going to do KWT, you can’t mess up the best part.
3. By Divine Right, “Ahead by a Century”: Not sure what was going on here. Pre-show drinking? “I had a feverish dream bigger than the dawn”? “I tempted your crowd, you tempted my hand?” A couple of big misses.

Cover Closest to Surpassing the Original
Steven Page, “Honey, Please”. His version is very professional sounding, and while that word can sometimes be antithetic to great rock n’ roll, I mean it in the best way possible. Out of respect for the band, Page brought his A-game to this cover. I love the fact that his song choice was a deep cut on a “bottom third” album, as opposed to something he might have just heard on the radio, likely indicating that he is a fan of the band. And best of all he did the song a favour and buried the keys that are so prominent on the Hip’s version.

Biggest Disappointment by Contemporaries of the Band
Rheostatics, “Bobcaygeon”. I couldn’t wait for this song to end. Blue Rodeo stayed truer to Gord’s phrasing and the song was better for it. I would have liked to have heard a different tune from the Rheos.

Most Interesting Interpretation of a Song
1. Amos the Transparent, “Giftshop”. Great build to the song and the harmonizing between the male and female voices was nice. Paul’s guitar was subbed out for a violin and it actually worked.
2. Hawksley Workman, “Emperor Penguin”. The sparseness of just an acoustic guitar and piano worked well on this tune.
3. Etiquette, “Escape is at Hand for the Travellin’ Man”. In general I found the stripped down versions of Hip songs to highlight the strength of Gord’s song writing. I liked the addition of the tom toms to this version and really enjoyed her haunting voice.

Worst Song Choice by an Otherwise Great Band
Cowboy Junkies, “Little Bones”. This song should be covered in sweat stains and spilt beer, not tea and cookie crumbs.

Best Example of What Davis Manning Could Have Brought to 90’s Hip Tunes
Los Poetas, “Thugs”. Love the horns on this!

Biggest Violation of the Rules of Cover Song Engagement
Woodpigeon, “Pigeon Camera”. Nobody is allowed to touch Pigeon Camera, nobody. This is just “the rules”.

Worst Covers
1. Sebastien Granger, “Grace, Too”
2. GREYS, “Courage”
3. The Pack A.D., “Gus: The Polar Bear from Central Park”

Best Covers (in no particular order):
1. The Odds, “Yer Not the Ocean”
2. The Sadies, “Long Time Running”
3. Skydiggers, “The Depression Suite: The Rock”
4. Donovan Woods,” Lake Fever”
5. Tim Baker, “Stay/Now for Plan A”

I agree with pretty much your entire assessment of the show, except for this. Personally I loved their smokey/bluesy rendition of Little Bones. I liked that they totally made it their own, and how it sounds like a long lost Cowboy Junkies deep cut.

I think our disagreement is partial. I don't mind the song as a Cowboy Junkies song, as in if I had never heard Little Bones before and the first time I was hearing those words was on a Cowboy Junkies album. It works in that way. However, for me, as a Hip cover, it falls far short of the original. It feels deflated. I still enjoy a good head-banging moment (even though I can't do it anymore without getting a headache) and Little Bones is one of those. I would have preferred that a band cranked the amps on this song and maybe made it even harder and louder than the original, taking it in a direction opposite to where the Cowboy Junkies went with it. Something off IVL or NFPA would have been right in the wheelhouse for the Cowboy Junkies and that's where I wish they had gone.

There are other covers that I dislike for both the reason that it doesn't work as a Hip cover and for the reason that on it's own it's a terrible song. DFA 1979's "Grace, Too" is an example of that. Even with Gord's lyrics, if I heard that tune on the radio I'd be changing the station.

wholeheartedly agree with this. I find that Tielli seems to really struggle with singing ever since their last(?) show back in 2007. That last show at Massey Hall was really tough to listen too. Not sure if he was ill or something, but he was really struggling. Most live stuff I've heard since then seems to be the same.
