Lol. I must be the only one who likes George's banter! :oops: Limblifter, Hannah Georgas, Stars, BNL and Donovan Woods were all standouts for me.

The FB group - I hit my breaking point with it in October and had to leave. And then I had to deal with everyone at the Secret Path shows looking at me in shock when i said No when they asked if I was on the #HFF. :roll: i had to ask someone what #HFF stood for! :lol: Glad to hear I'm not missing anything!

I thought George did a good job as well. And generally I enjoyed the vast majority of the covers. I enjoyed listening live without having any clue what song or artist was coming up next. There were a few misses but the fact we got 4 commercial free hours of hip covers was incredible.

I'm not much of a Facebook user but I lasted all of 3 or 4 weeks last summer there. So many reposts so many people just totally going overboard trying to show their fandom. Hipbase is where it's at.

I hope By Divine Right changed lyrics on purpose. Either way, it didn't work. And Harrison... no.

PS: a surprising number of people are fans of the comic "it's a good life, if you don't weaken" by Seth. Either that or they missed GD's point entirely, that for a good life you just might HAVE TO weaken. Argh.

Georges banter got pretty annoying when it was done over the music. Hopefully Tight Pants did that to avoid bootlegging of something he plans on releasing properly?

I think what might be getting lost here is that, so far, there isn't another Canadian media personality that has tried to bring this many people together to celebrate this band or another person that is actually capable of pulling it off. It's the second time in less than a year that this band got to take over a public broadcaster, commercial free, for four hours.

And, all in all that four hours was tremendously entertaining. Boots, Emperor, Thompson, What Blue, Chancellor/ABAC, Blow, Plan A/Stay and The Rock are my highlights. Both Bobcaygeons were indicative of the bands that played them, and the surprising difficulty of that song. The takes on Poets, Grace and Thugs were right out of left field and fun. No Threat and The New Maybe proved to be worthy inclusions, both in the catalog and in this collection. Having PS I Love You do Smalltown Bringdown was perfect.

Gus didn't really work for me (until near the end) and I think Gems was the wrong song for Choir! Choir! Choir! to do. But, hey, its batting average was still pretty strong.

I understand what you're saying, you are correct - George is first and foremost a DJ and they all talk over songs...but I've never liked it. Just something we all have to put up with. I knew he was being sincere and this must have been a massive undertaking to organize -Iike you probably heard, he had been working on this event prior to Gord's health announcement.

Overall pretty interesting mix of hits and misses. I think it comes down to the fact that some songs just can't be covered. Doesn't matter who's doing them, some are just HIP only. (Same would go for any band).
I was really surprised with Steven Page. Could've easily been his own song. Sounded very natural. Lake Fever was pretty great too. Shame about the Rheos. I would have been a great cover if they'd had more practice I think. :lol:

Re Strombo, I agree that I think the guy gets a little bit of a bad rap, I kind of like his interviews and although he is no Ron MacLean, I'd take him over Kelly Hrudy or Nick Kypreos on HNIC any day .

As for standout covers; had an opportunity to meet and chat with Donovan Wood a year or so ago (when he opened for Matt Anderson) and became a huge fan since. His is definitely my standout track. Hawksley Workman is as well,

Seeing Hawksley, Tim and Donovan for The Writes of Spring in April. It'd be great if any of them were to perform their covers during the shows.
