I'd recommend seeing the show first.

Re: Gord Downie - Secret Path - edgoffin - 10-20-2016

I went to the show without hearing the album, and found that an interesting experience to see the visuals and music tell the story for the first time. One thing that would maybe be interesting to read is the original macleans article that was the first inspiration.

The album itself -- like said above a child of MMP and Coke Machine Glow, maybe more MMP to my ears. It is a really strong vocal performance, and if you liked the production of MMP this sits right alongside it. Interesting that Gord finished this album, then brought the same producers to the next Hip project. Obviously he enjoyed the experience and the final product. I can imagine it will win many Junos across multiple categories.

Sounds good. I won't receive the album until next week. Yay. Amazon.

same here. I listened to the stranger for a couple of hours as I got ready to go, just because I wanted to be in the frame of mind to remember what the big story is, that it's not just about "seeing Gord". But it really is worth waiting for the whole performance as the first time you hear it, for me anyway.

Question:

My wife is going to do a unit on residential schools and using the book and music as a centrepiece for her grade 8 class - students who are wanting to take it a step fuether are going to spend some lunches creating art work that reflects their experience

She would love to send the art work to the PMs office, the Premiers office and also to Gord himself

Now, obviously she cant write directly to him - but any idea what representative she could mail the stuff to?

I think she is doing exactly what Gord would have wanted and actually think he would be delighted to see the kids's creations...

any help would be appreciated

Re: Gord Downie - Secret Path - jamseyb - 10-20-2016

I would recommend not listening to it first. I received the vinyl on Monday night and it took a lot of will power, but I am really glad I didn't spin it. It was really cool to have no idea where Gord was was going to take this story. I had so many emotions while listening to it and without question the tears flowed continually. Like Thompson girl, I rarely looked at the screen. I felt like I didn't need to. I can look at my book or watch the animated feature anytime, but seeing Gord perform the songs so passionately was worth it. And to echo some other posts, Gords voice sounded amazing!

I don't know, I preferred seeing the live show first. I have the album/digital download but am waiting until after the Toronto show to do so. Getting the first taste of it live in Ottawa was amazing.

i know its personal opinion but i can't see any band that has a new disc out without knowing that disc inside and out before going the show
guess i can't break that habit....and i don't think it will take away from my experience of the show tonight...i can't see how it could

have a great show ya'll and the first person who sits near me and starts a HIP chant i'll f'n slap you!

Re: Gord Downie - Secret Path - SRK - 10-21-2016

I found the live experience watching the movie with the songs playing out live in front of me without knowing the full story and what to expect packed far more of an emotional wallop. I wouldn't look at this like a normal show, or normal album. This is something different, which is why I suggested waiting.

Interestingly, a few people said they watched gord all night...there were numerous times I forgot he was even there, since I was focused on the screen. Then I'd look back down and Gord would be mimicking walking, or paddling or something and I'd think "oh...right."

Re: Gord Downie - Secret Path - coldlakeswimmer - 10-21-2016

the screen kept drawing me in too. gord was moving in sync. the film, the music and gord became one.
this is very different.

I have no choice, I won't get the album until Monday. Quite excited to hear it tonight.
