Did any of you see this on the news?? I thought it was GREAT :thumb: The Iraqi people look so happy; celebrating, beating on the statue, riding the statue head around. Awesome!! It is still a long road ahead, but this looks like a good beginning to their liberation.

Any thoughts??

P.S. Yes, our soldier made a very STUPID move by putting the U.S. flag up on the head for a few moments. UGH!! What the hell was he thinking???? Confused

I just caught a replay of the event on the news. It was pretty cool. Its good to see that we aren't over there for nothing. I always questioned wether the Iraqi people really wanted us to do something about Saddam. Guess this answers my question.

I was watching the news and I had the feeling that the people of Iraq are almost acting. I am glad the crowds didn't turn against the troops.

Saddam Hussein has terrorized these people for twenty+ years . Torture , murder and entire families dissapearing ! Acting ? The U.S. administration supported Saddam when they knew he was a brutal dictator , supplied him with the chemicals that he used against the Kurds . The U.S. knew this was happening and did nothing to stop it. It was against their interests since Iraq was fighting Iran. So more innocents wer'e rendered insignificant . Fast-forward to 91 Gulf War . Coalition forces drive Iraqi forces out of Kuwait and back into Iraq . The U.S. then implores , incourages the Shias , the Kurds and other Iraqis to rebel against Saddam and overthrow him . Under a newly imposed UN resolution the Iraqi Regime is not allowed to utilize their military equipment , this does not deter them . The U.S. knew this and did nothing to help the Iraqi people . The resistance was brutally crushed . UN sanctions further cripple Iraqi society while Saddam gains more power as the people are merely trying to survive , let alone trying to topple Saddams regime . Hunreds of thousands die directly from the sanctions . Now it's 2003 and the American led invasion has come to liberate the Iraqi people , would you trust the Americans ? As far as the Iraqi people are concerned one of the two evils has been eliminated . Years of oppresion are temporarily replaced with jubilation , suspicion and outright hatred of the Coalition of the Willing. Soon enough the occupiers will be the target of their outrage . Order and "democracy" better be implemented immediately or chaos will ensue . The Iraqi people are sorely missing the neccessities to live , infrastructures have been demolished . This topic is too complicated to "one off " a response. Just my view on the situation.

I'm glad for the Iraqi people that Saddam's regime is crushed, but where are the chemical weapons which were the reason for the war (according to the US)?

Beat, didn't you get the updated songbook?? "Weapons of Mass Destruction" was February's tune. It was replaced by a cover of the WWII classic "Liberation" in mid-March.

PS Who thinks Syria and/or Iran are going to be "liberated" next??? Iran must be feeling especially secure now that they have the Americans to their east (Afganistan) and west (Turkey and Iraq)??? My prediction: Gulf War III just in time for the November sweeps week.

Maybe the radiation sensors are detecting all the depleted uranium shells the Americans have fired at the Iraqis. Oh, wait. Aside from the fact that cancer rates in areas that were near the fighting in have increased 700% since the first Gulf war, the American military would never stoop so low as to use nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons first. :roll:

I like how the media keeps pointing out the "discoveries" of chemical suits all over the place as proof of the Iraqis' intention to use WMD. The fact that no modern army does anything without having NBC protection available is apparently moot.

No offence prz , but wasn't it FOX who brought us the sporting extravaganza " Man vs Beast " Entropy is bang on the money .The Bush administration has pulled out of Nuclear , Biological and Chemical warfare treaties . They also pulled out of an International Court designed to prosecute war criminals , by doing this the US will not be held accountable for it's military actions . The US refers to the Geneva Convention regularly, and breaks it just as readily. (Guantonomo Bay Cuba) The US is on a mission to enforce democracy . Last time I looked freedom of speech was a staple of democracy . God forbid you're a journalist reporting on civillian casualties , or providing a view differen't than the Bush Administration . Al Jazeera was bombed accidentaly (intentionally) in Afghanistan and now in Baghdad . The Palestine Hotel is currently home to 200 + journalists and Known to the military as such . This didn't stop them from firing a tank shell into it and extinguishing more life . They forgot to plaster their fu**ing flag up there . No one in the building heard or saw any supposed "sniper fire" ! Syria is likely to be next . Iraq was the warmup .Saddam is worth more alive to the coalition than dead . The rhetoric and propaganda will continue . A possible story line could go something like " So and so is harbouring Saddam Hussein and must be dealt with " "Evil-doers will be stopped." " God Bless America"

The American public bears the greatest responsibility. You live in the worlds only super power , you have the oppurtunity , the voice , the power to change the world peacefully , positively and justly. Self education defeats ignorance . Maybe it's not my place to say , but I'd rather live my life in criticizm than regret .

Wow, I can't believe how much criticizm you have toward the states. I am sorry you feel so many negative thoughts towards us. I am starting to realize how many people actually dislike us. Makes me sad. Sad

I am a peaceful, loving American, I hate to be put into these catagories. What exactly am I supposed to do to change things????

Unfortunately its not that simple.

I have to admit I was somewhat 'blinded' like the majority of americans at one point as well. Luckily my brother (mark) has shown me the light!

highwaygirl28, its not too late for you to fix this.. not that there is anything to fix. Its not your fault. Blame the government and greed.. and many other things to be honest.. But in my opinion those are the two worst propellants in situations like this.

The press sucks. USA press in this case anyway. If you watch the CNN, Fox or any other major US network you will see highlights of the days 'liberation' of Iraq. Which is fine. 99% of the time these reports are accurate. Unfortunately its what they DON'T show you that is leading the amercan citizens to be misslead about this attack on Iraq (and whoever is next).

As Mark has mentioned many many times to me there is more than one side to each story. For instance.. the Al Jazeera reports killed at a Baghdad hotel. According to the USA news there was sniper fire from the hotel on US troops so they returned fire.. Now for the rest of the story according to non US news, the sniper fire was 'reported' as coming from the lobby of the hotel. The Al Jazeera reports were on the 15th floor! Either the US army needs to really carefully screen who operates their tanks for aiming accuracy or maybe this wasn't quite as innocent as the US news stations are making it to sound.

So, if you dig deep and look at all the facts (not just the ones pushed onto you by your country) you'll see a completely different story many of the times.

Why would the US press do this? GREED. I haven't heard any figures but I'm guessing there are more eyes watching TV in the states than there is any other time of the year.. possibly even more than during Superbowl Sunday. At least at the onset of the war.. If I'm not mistaken viewers are getting sick of seeing the same war scenes over and over and are turning away a bit. With all these extra viewers can you imagine the prices CNN, Fox etc.. are getting for commercials?? Whomever has the best war coverage gets the best ratings.. Ratings equal $$$..

Sad, yes, but true!

What can you do? Well as Mark keeps telling me, investigate.. Check out <a class="postlink" href="http://www.cbc.ca/">http://www.cbc.ca/</a> They have unbiased reports on the war, they are neither anti american nor anti Iraq. They are straight facts. If you are serious about this maybe Mark can post some decent sites for getting news facts from. I am not following the war due to the propaganda I see.. Makes me sick and such so I just get tidbits from him.

Before you can accurately make a decision on anything you MUST have the facts. Unfortunately the US press is getting very known as forgetting to report the whole story.

Facts, facts and more facts.. thats the bottom line highwaygirl28, you have to dig a bit deeper than the traditional news outlets you are accustomed to. Mark's position on Americans is not against people like you nor is it hateful towards people like you. Its the way your press jam lies and missleading information down your throat. Its the way your president is a hypocritical A**hole. As he mentioned Bush has pulled out of Nuclear dissarmament and chemical warfare treaties/agreements.. Why?? If he is so against that type of warfare then why is he pulling out? Things like that. Don't take it personally. Its not you specifically but quite a few different reasons. The american people as a whole seem to be quite busy and take the news as its given.. they don't question it, they don't dig deeper.

I work online and have many american friends.. Great people. There is always that "Canadians are friends and Americans are rude" thing.. but from what I've seen americans are great people too. They are just a bit misslead into believing what the Government wants they to.

HOpefully this sheds some light on what you can do and why Mark has a distaste in his mouth for people south of us...
