Anybody ever read Plato's "The Republic?" -

...good gawd is this a chore. Ya think he'd throw in a smokin' monkey or at least a quick-witted martian or something.
Boy, does this suck...
Any of you crazy Greek Philosophy fans know any good Plato drinking games?
...the worst Saturday night of my life... well, not counting that Birthday in Moose Jaw... okay, okay: the Moose Jaw jail.

Speaking of heavy lifting, im reading some "tale of two cities" by Dickens (I dont mean to compare this to the republic, which is obvious a lot tougher and mundane) but when the author's idea of humour is spousal abuse and graverobbing, well, lets just say its not fun stuff--

hock: I love The Republic!!! So many interesting questions arise all throughout...
The "Imperfect Societies" section is the best... if you haven't reached it yet, then at least you have something to look forward to!! :thumb:

You're right, once you hit a rhythm it's not all bad...
I'm tackling the last 100 pages today. I'd have to say the "Common Women to be shared by society" has been the most interesting so far... although the "unlimited sex for the elites" is not without its charm.
Ancient Greece, on the next "Springer..."

I forgot to mention that i think he is a little over-idealistic at times and contradictory... haha

"A little?" Socrates is so pie-in-the sky that on page 567, book VI, ver. b he actually picks the Leafs to win the cup... talk about out there!
*Let the ignore listing begin!*

I wound just love it for about 50 pages, then the next 100 would be sooo boring and then I'd come across another section that I thought was great, and so on. I thought it was worthwhile though, because there are so many allusions to Plato in literature and it's nice to be able to pick up on them.

Can't stand it. Plato was backwards on just about everything under the sun, IMHO. Aristotle had the better philsophies, or at least the ones that one can live by...
CHORE is the perfect word for The Republic. I'm having to do it AGAIN for my History of Criticism class, but thankfully I don't have to pay close attention since I read the heady brew before...

Had to read it for a Humanities class. Some good discussion came about in class, but the read for me was very painful.

I suppose I could take a shot at Lalime here, but it would go through his legs. :thumb:
Damn. It's not nearly as funny now that he's a Blue. I'll need to work on my "Hasek's Groin" material. Not that it matters with the frickin lockout.
Man, reading these posts about manditory reading reinforces how happy I am to be done with school.

Don't rub it in...or I'll be coming for you!!
Actually just wait three more months. Then I'll have graduated from university with a throughly useless degree in English Lit and we can mock everybody else together!!

Word. I kid you not, one of the actual factors in going back for a second degree was the fact that I could put "BS" after my name... I actually thought (and still think) the laughs alone are worth it.
I figured what the hell: useless degree's? Make Mine a Double!!

Good thinking - get it all overwith ASAP. I did my degree and then my Master's back-to-back. I knew that if I started working right after I finished my degree that there would be no going back. When I started working my wife was just starting her second degree and seeing her do homework gave me the shakes!

Have you found that a Masters makes a big difference, earnings-wise or even potential jobs-wise? I'm debating the extra time and money...
