Quote:Canada didn't hide its bands behind its back and say, "OK, America, guess which one you want!" No, Canada put Alanis Morissette, Barenaked Ladies, and the Tragically Hip out on the table, and you, America, chose the foul-mouthed pretty one and the nerdy sentimentalists that caused you to shoot milk out your nose with "chickity China, the Chinese chicken". Looks like I've answered my own question. Never mind.
 Good Stuff

"All you young "punks" with your four-minute therapy session singles that populate corporate radio: quit while the money's good, 'cause you're riding one big wave of bullshit that -- if there's any justice in this world -- In Between Evolution will topple like a tsunami from the north."
If that quote is not gold, I don't know what is! Uh, Hoobastank I hope you're listening.

I dunno...
I've always felt like it's Canada's Superman.
Every Canadian knows The Hip, we're all fans... and the Americans for the most part have no idea. It's like why no one ever recognized Clark Kent, I mean, he was right under their noses, clear as day.
Like my boys... The Hip.
Always just kinda, made me smile.
Sunday
Edit: Hmmm, not sure I'm helping, made a friend of mine from Miami listen to some Hip... he went mental... what have I done !?! :thumb:

i'd say more towards the south. us buffalonians are very well represented
whenever the hip are within a five hour drive. but i get your point.
thanks casey for the link!! great review. but the part about the first two songs are the weakest is questionabe. even the songs that i thought were near the bottom are starting to rise. it very well could be there finest release. :music

I really wish Canadian artists were more well-known in the US.

I don't wish they were more well-known in the States, but I acknowledge it's a purely selfish wish. I'm glad I can go see the Hip at smaller bars and concert halls, rather than the Fleet Center. There's a better energy there, and more intimacy too. Heck, I saw 54-40 in the bar around the corner a couple years ago, and Sloan was playing down the street the other month (but I couldn't go because my fiancee broke her ankle a couple days before). I happen to like that.
On the other hand, if Canadian bands were more popular down here, I might have gotten to see the Headstones live before they broke up, or Eric's Trip during its reunion tour. But some bands never make it down here at all. Still, having seen Gord and the boys at both the Somerville Theater and the ACC on the M@W tour, I'd pick Somerville any day of the week.

Absolutely!! Love seeing the Hip in a club that holds 500 max..what a rush. When we were in Cleveland, we went to a few bars before the show...noone had even heard of the Hip (except those who were there to see the show, of course)...it was our awesome 'little' secret. :thumb:

How superpoetic/supercool are these lines...
"The album's fringes smolder from the heat of its passionate core."
"Downie has a frantic urgency in his voice that comes trembling from his lungs, equally fearless and fearsome."
"...roars forth with a chorus awash in cymbal crashes and overpowering group vocals, like a bully whose thrashings induce near-rapturous results."
I love it. I friggin love it, man.

*headdesk* NOTHING good would come of the hip hitting it big in the states...at least in my selfish opinion. I mean really, would hardcore fans want them to be factored into the American Mass Media Psycho-Pop Driven Machine? Would the band themselves? :pause: I didn't think so. I think that if The Hip (as well as many other Candian artists) really wanted to break in America, they would follow the formula. Pitch the most radio-friendly song you can, and count the bucks. So many posts that I read on this board have to deal with the fact that the state of American music and entertainment is total and utter crap. April, I've heard you bash America and Americans on a few different occasions...so why do you want one of your favorite bands to be embraced by the (tounge in cheek here) awful American masses? [/end rant]
