So much for presenting a moderate view of Islam. Good grief.

Christians murder their spouses all the time. Why do we connect this murder with religion?

Granted, that's the spin the newspaper tries to put on it, but really, isn't this just another murder?

You and your logic and sound mind - it's going to get you into trouble, Skippy.

Re: Buffalo businessman charged with beheading wife - NegPhil - 02-15-2009

Really? It seems odd to me. The guy starts a cabel station for moderate muslems than goes to the Saudis for money? The Saudis are the most radical folks in the muslem world. He then cuts her head off? That is not normal. That is the behavior of a radical Muslim. He did not just kill her he preformed a ritual act of mutilation used by religious radicals.

Re: Buffalo businessman charged with beheading wife - skippy the wonder dog - 02-16-2009

So the fact that he killed his wife demonstrates that he's a radical religious fanatic, and that his media activities were a sham? Or simply the fact that he beheaded her?

That's a pretty big inference you're making.

Fair enough. But let me ask you this: When Ted Haggard was caught meeting up with a male prostitute and doing meth, was he just another meth-using john? Or did the rest of his life give special context to the crime?

Re: Buffalo businessman charged with beheading wife - das_hips - 02-16-2009

How does Ted Haggard have anything to do with this? Of course his position and social status would undoubtedly lead to a higher media profile for much the same reason that whenever Britney Spears has diarrhea the entire media is apt to provide "shocking" rationale behind the "latest development".

Your logic implies that we should assimilate Evangelical's with gay sex and crystal meth. I find it hard to believe that an individual intent on dispelling distorted Western views on Islamic culture would look for funding from "The Saudis (the most radical folks in the muslem world)"... That's up for debate, but I believe you are wrong. I think that it is more likely he was looking for funding from Saudi Arabia because the religion that is prominent in the Middle East would likely approve of promoting an unbiased view of the religion.

Perhaps I was unclear. I didn't mean to insinuate that this guy beheaded his wife because he's a Muslim. Rather, I intended to point out the irony of a man, who set about to present a properly moderate picture of Islam, beheading his wife. In that sense, it's the same as the guy, who preached regularly that homosexuality is sinful, doing meth and a male prostitute.

I did not intend to imply that Islam is somehow inherently violent or that Evangelical Christianity inherently pushes its clergy toward gay sex. Both are obviously false.

It could be that I didn't communicate clearly enough. It could be that you guys jumped to a few conclusions about what I was saying. It's probably both.

This was an honor killing IMO.

Re: Buffalo businessman charged with beheading wife - VioletlightHeron - 02-17-2009

Reading the article, it seems they were going through a divorce and there were previous allegations that he abused her. That said, I find it a bit ironic that a self-labeled "moderate muslim" behaves in a way that is encouraged and condoned by the more radical strains of Islamic thought. I for one will not be holding my breath for the dinosaur media to give this sad incident more than a passing mention, unlike the Ted Haggard incident. I will be pleasantly surprised if they do, though.

For the record, I do believe there are Muslim believers and leaders who want to live their lives according to their religious traditions, but I also think these moderates do not have the willingness to stand up and critize their more radical brethen who seek to impose their religion on others through violence or intimitation.

I suppose you have a point, there. I don't hear of too many Christians beheading their spouses, though. That's a bit extreme, no? The irony in the behading story is too much to handle, it really is. :?

I prefer to assimilate them with corruption and greed, myself. Big Grin

Well, I think it depends on yer cultural traditions. Hiring a biker to whack her is the traditional option for modern Christians.
