....does REM remind you of the hip? not even a bit? i find a couple of their songs have the same feel, and some even sound. in my opinion gord downie and the singer of REM (name?) can sound similar at times. ormaybe its just me. or maybe its because i've been listening to nothing but the hip as of late and now i decided to throw in the best of REM..... or maybe its just me?
Michael Stipe looks/acts/sounds kind of like Gord, and I've heard comparisons, so, yeah, I'd have to agree with you.
The beginning of "World Container" sounds like the beginning of "Daysleeper" by REM. They don't sound as similar as a lot of rock critics claim though.
A few people I have leant cds to, or have heard the hip playing in my house/car comment that they sound 'a bit like a cross between REM and the Rolling stones'

"If The Rolling Stones and R.E.M. were to have sex, the result would be a five headed baby called The Tragically Hip"
- Adam Kaspar, producer of In Between Evolution
I have been a long time fan of both R.E.M. and The Tragically Hip. They were tied for my favorite band for years until R.E.M. released UP. Until that point R.E.M were a great rock band. With UP they began trend chasing and lost their edge. They are still a great band but they left the world of rock and roll for a quick trip to Radiohead land and can't seem to find the way home. When I play the Hip for people they usually say, " they sound like R.E.M. with balls". I have come to the conclusion that the reason people think they sound the same is because of the Aryan twang. Most singers try and mimic the sound of the African Americans that created rock music or the European musicians who were imitating the African Americans. Gord Downie and Mike Stipe are firmly rooted in traditional rock and roll but have maintained their natural voices.

Yeah, I'd agree with that.
I never saw the connection myself? Stones yes, but not REM?

Guitarist vs. Bass player – is that allowed in rock wrestling?
-- just watch out for Peter Buck and his folded chair outside of the ring - the man has been know to lose his cool and damage British Airways cutlery....

They both do backing vocals, so I think it's a fair match-up.
One match up that's not allowed is Johnny Fay vs. Bill Berry, since BB is on the IR.
