I've only been a Hip fan for a couple of years, but after discovering IBE I rushed out and brought the back catalogy and of course brought WC last year. Now all but one album falls into either the Love or Like catagory, the album is (the thread title kindoff gives it away
) Trouble at the Henhouse.
No matter how much I try to like this album, I always end up disapointed - the first 3 tracks are all brilliant, but after that I just get bored, the songs just don't stand out for me, all the same slowish tempo with no real catchy bits (aside from Coconut Cream which seems more a joke, but still comes across as the best of the tracks after the first 3).
The thing that makes it even weirder for me is this album is sandwiched by my too fav Hip albums in Day and Phantom.
I new to the Hip community and have no real idea what fans concider good and bad albums, just wondering if I was alone in feeling this way. Don't hate me and flame me please, I do like/love all the other albums and i'm not trying incite a arguement.
if you don't like henhouse - you're pretty much right on par with the average hip fan; though i have been hearing alot of love for it lately. I personally like it more than i used (which was not alot), though im still not a HUGE fan of it. There are about 6 or 7 good songs and the rest falls flat IMO.
i also never really liked Gift Shop, in spite of it's excellent lyrics; reminds me of watered down Nautical Disaster (no pun intended)
All of the Hip CD's, Henhouse took me the longest to 'get'..I was indifferent about it for very long, but it grew on me.

That thread helps me understand the average Hip fans opinions on the album, thanks. I about the only person I know who has even heard of the band i'm afraid, so aside from the music know very little about the band or fans :/
So aside from the first EP (which I didn't even know existed!!!!) Music & Work seems to be the album that's generally rated lowest on average, not Henhouse.

Harsh forum, I believe normal forums just ban the user not track them down and shoot them dead! It's the rules.....
But seriously I adore the Hip and have been trying to spread the word in my little (musically naive) corner off the world by forcing my friends and family to listen to this band! I just don't enjoy TATH as much as the other albums and was just curious to see if this was the norm.
^^^ give it time. Will at some point learn the merits of this album. TATH was a different cd when it first came out. Much mellower feel to it than Day for Night and FC. I always found that their albums never really grip me from the start. I need a warm up period before I can say Yeah, I see what's going on here.
What particlular parts do you not like? Let's analyzed it. Lyrics, melody, energy?

Well, some people feel that the Hip were kind of burned out when they did TATH tight on the heels of DFN, and there may be something to that. It was also their first and last self-produced album, which might tell us something.
It's a pretty uneven effort, and mellower than what came before, but some of the songs grow on you. The best stuff on the album has a kind of moody quality that will eventually get under your skin.
Or not. Your mileage may vary.

Janie, I still think a few tracks will grow on you. Check out especially "Let's Stay Engaged" with an unbiased opinion- I think it's got some great guitar work and is one of the most underrated tracks.
I also think "Flamenco" and "Sherpa" are two of the best Hip tracks to listen to at night, right behind "Escape is at Hand."

I have to compare this to Pearl Jam. There are PJ fans that like everything they've released and then there are PJ fans who want PJ to be more like the "ten" era. Im more of 'ten" PJ fan but the new albums is good! back to the topic
Personally I love Henhouse. When I first bought the album and heard the first song (Giftshop) I was blown away. But some great songs like Coconut Cream, Dont Wake Daddy, and Lets Stay Engaged. All quality songs. I guess I can understand why people dont like it. But to me each song and album are a sonic snap shoot in time. Where they are in the in their loves.
IVL is the album I dont care for. To me thats boring and a weak effort. I got the feeling they weren't firing on all cylinders. maybe some tense in the band or personal issues. IBE is average as well. But dayum WC brought them back!

Let's Stay Engaged is a great track, likewise Don't Wake Daddy. And like Esthete, I like the much-maligned Apartment Song.
I'd say the low points are Coconut Cream and Butts Wigglin'.
And I agree on IVL. That's the one I'd pick as their weakest album, but I think a lot of that may have been the producer's influence. Substitute the three unreleased tracks for the worst tracks on IVL and you have a much better album.
