....i've been watching quit a bit of movies lately and most recently i've been watching war movies. the last two i watched were full metal jacket and apocalypse now. i must say, i was a bit dissapointed with apocalypse now. i thought it was supposed to be the greatest war movie of all time? i liked full metal jacket and saving private ryan better. i have yet to seeplatoon so that one is probably next. anyways, what war movies are your favourites and any suggestions are appreciated.

Well, "Stripes" was great but I have a feeling you're talking more about serious war movies and not comedies.

I'm partial to the Submarine flicks....
The thing with Apocalypse Now is you have to see the original cut and not the "redux". It was the first major American film to address the war in Vietnam although some would argue it's not really a Vietnam movie but a interpretation of Conrads "Heart Of Darkness". I recommend you check out "Band Of Brothers" "BlackDown" "Gallipoli" and Kubrics "Paths OfGlory".
Band of Brothers is something i can and do watch over and over, very well done, and the documentary with all the surviving men of the Easy Co. is very touching....in a manly sort of way.
Read Conrad's Heart of Darkness, or watch the Hearts of Darkness: The Making of Apocolypse Now and you may come away with a better appreciation of the film.
Windtalkers is pretty good, as is Thin Red Line
personally my faves are the original 3 Star Wars

yeah i rented the original cut. the redux version was just way too long for me to sit through. over 3 hours, no thanks. i just personally didn't enjoy the movie as much i thought it was hyped up to be.

I would say that it is not really a war movie, per se, and this is why it disappoints people. They expect a movie about the Vietnam War, and what they get is a movie that simply uses the Vietnam War as a setting.
I'd pick:
Apocalypse Now
The Thin Red Line (which was unfairly overshadowed by....)
Saving Private Ryan
A Bridge Too Far
The Battle of Britain, for all the georgeous planes!
The Naked and the Dead
And others previously mentioned.
I haven't seen Jarhead, but it's meant to be good.

I saw that U-571 movie with a girl (believe it or not) when it came out. The theatre was freezing cold. I remember Matthew Mcconaghay (sp?) being in it and that's about it. Subtitles? Yeah, I think so. My memory is muddy though.

Yes, the version I seen of Das Boot I had to read, but it was still great, oh and I forgot Shindlers List....
what was the movie with sean penn and michael j. fox..i seem to remember that being not bad
