can't find anything amusing in hacking other peoples computers..
a**holes. I went on a weekend trip to Calgary last weekend and when I got back I went to go work and found that my server had been hit with a root kit
So its been down for the last week getting rebuilt with a newer OS that should be more hack resistant. I think this is the 3rd or 4th time I've been hacked in the few years I've owned the server. Other than 'rooting' the server there wasn't really any visible damage so I'm guessing they were just trying to gain access for the 'big day'.

Gotta keep up with those patches. What OS are you running and what knid of firewall?

OS was RH 8 but they rebuilt using RH 9. Firewall, well it was running turtle firewall when it got rooted. Not sure what is going to be on it now. I had up2date running automatically but either it didn't work or the patch came too late.
Unfortunately I'm not a unix guru, I write perl/php fluently but when it comes to unix admin I'm still learning, I use webmin for most things I need to deal with and some command line stuff for qmail but other than that I try not to fuss with the nuts and bolts too much.

We have on online business, if we were to get struck down as long as Hippylettuce was, we would be screwed.

Are you running the firewall, webserver and mail all on one box?
highwaygirl28: luckily my server is only my 2nd income. It does screw me up a bit since I an not earning money now, but my day job (programming) pulls the slack for the most part.

Yes, apache, the firewall and qmail are all on the same box.

Thats your problem, get a old 233 or something and install a dedicated hardware firewall. Something smoothwall or ipcop, both linux based firewalls. Then have your webserver, mail etc on another box.
