I have been learning to play the guitar for about two years and find I still kind of suck. Most of the Hips music is hard for me to play. I thought I would start with their early stuff but find it complicated. How long had Bobby, Gord and Paul been playing guitar by the time they recorded the first album? :nooooo
I think there is a history section somewhere on this site, but if I'm not mistaken they first started playing together in 1985.
i know that a few of them had been playing together since the 70's at least. In the backdrop of the poets video, the band name is the Rodents. That was the name of Colin Sinclair and Rob Baker's high school punk band.
I think they officially formed as The Hip in 1985 with Davis Manning on Saxophone. From what I remember, Paul didn't join until 1986.
I thought it was '83, and then Paul joined in '85. Man, I wish The Rodents recorded some stuff. Or just resurrecting a song during a show would do.
I remember seeing an interview where they said Paul had only played for about 6 months before he joined the band. They said they were more concerned with bringing in a guy they got along with more than how good he was at the time............

just a hilarious thing to further this - The rodents originated at the same i high school i went too - and appearantly, at one of the school dances, they got shut down for being "too raucous." so, suffice to say, they had a bit of a different vibe going on

all i can tell you is that ive heard that gord started playing bass (might have started on guitar????) in high school - i cant get any more specific,
