Hey all!!
BIG question!! Nautical Disaster - better live on Live Between Us or studio on Day For Night?
Personally I prefer the live version - the ending is true downie genius! What ya all think?

LBU hands down. I feel the hip are better off live with any song
but that particular version is one of the best.
i think ive read that the ending on it is a cover of david bowie or something.... check it out im not sure.....
Live all the way.
I know he does China Girl a little bit on that album...could be on ND...I'll have to go give it a listen

It's Bad Time to Be Poor by the Rheostatics.
Live, all the way. The only song at that album that doesn't beat the actual studio version is Grace, Too. Most likely because that song has so much studio work that it gives me goosebumps. What an awesome live album.
Live iz betta

gonna have to disagree with das hips.....Grace, too better studio then live???? that song has to be one of the best live songs EVER, by any band......the drum beat, the bass at the start.....that is intense...I think for their next cd, the boys should record all new material live, then release it....live is where they excel, and although I support everything they do, I hardly listen to any studio material anymore with all the boots floating around....
The live one is the best version of Nautical I've ever heard.
first heard Live Between a scant 3 years ago. got goosebumbs when i first heard grace... still do. no question that live is better for almost all. nautical disaster on between us is the best. the "c'mon's" at the end cant be beat.
btw, the ending on nautical on SNL has a quick line that gord sings. it sounds familar. anyone know?
I believe (and I'm going totally from memory here) that it's a line from "A Penny More" by the Skydiggers...
"Sons and Lovers...no-one compares to you...." or something like that...
Once again, this is off the top of my head, so if I'm way off, so be it...

Better than what I had... nothing. Thanks.
I really love the version on Glastonbury & Elsewhere,it's a straight forward locomotive version with no improvosational skills, but its awesome awesome awesome :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: I Love your old world ways
I agree that virtually any Hip song sounds better in concert than on record. I'm trying to think of an exception ,and i can't come up with one. I guess in some cases its neither better nor worse, but merely different. Gift Shop would be a good example of this, same with ABAC. Both songs are incredible on TATH, but are really toyed with in concert.
As for LBU, while it is a phenomenal live album, one of the best commerical live releases ever in my opinion, it is a so-so performance by Hip standards. There are sooooo many shows in wide circulation that in my opnion are far, far better shows than LBU.
here's hoping that gord's ongoing bootleg project will pour into future TTH performances (although I will go broke because I will want to buy every single show).

I can't believe I'm the only person so far who thinks any live Nautical pales in comparison to the DFN version! For me, as with all of DFN, you can really only get the true feel for the record by listening to it in the dark...brings out the true haunting of the album and the work of art it really is. The way ND crunches, it's just so tight and powerful, I've found that seeing it live just isn't as powerful as on DFN. While most of their songs excel live, ND, as well as Good Life just have this immense power on the record that doesn't quite hold up live. But who am I to criticize a band that gets better and better live everytime I see them. Just a thought...
I'm here ya with the studio of ND :thumb: The power of that is undeniable,as for good life, i really loved how they did it at the queens jubilee :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
