I gotta say when I first heard the album, Fly and Last Night...were by far my least favourite songs on WC. Fly is rather mundane to me, not very different from anything else the Hip have done. I think the lyrics are good, but musically it is relatively boring. It seemed as though I knew what each chord change was going to be before it happened. The only part I thought that stood out musically was the bridge, where it keeps building. So many people love this song but I just don't get it. After I saw them play it live in Calgary I liked it more, but it's still one of my least favourite songs on WC. I find there are far more exciting songs on the new album, specifically Yer not the Ocean, The Drop Off, World Container and Family Band. It seems as though many people think Fly is an "instant classic" but I would beg to differ.
Short answer...
...yes.
Semi-short answer, yes...

I don't mind the song, but it certainly is more of a 'generic' Hip tune than the rest of the material on the album. One of the redeeming qualities of this song on this album is that Mr. Fay's drums are quite heavy and up front, and GD's vocal capacity can truly shine; his voice exudes much more emotion than was present on the last two records... and that is why this song is a keeper...
ya - Fly is a great song!!!!!
It's one of my fav's on the album!

First time I heard it I loved it! :thumb:
Toss this one up to the varied tastes of the Hipbasers.

I LOVE "Fly". It's one of the songs I can't get enough of on WC. Also, Last Night (I won't explain my reasoning) hits a serious and chilling note with me. I have my own ideas of what that song is about...the last time Gord sings/screams "why don't you love me like you used to...." projects (to me) a tremendous amount of Hip-heart-on-the-sleave emotion.

its okay, it grew on me. im still not Crazy about it per se, but its definately worth listening to
Yes, you're the only one..

I still haven't found a song that I dislike.
YES...go listen to it on repeat until you appreciate it, then write a 500 word essay on your foolishness...kidding. You'll come around to it eventually.

Same here, great song.
it's one of my faves on the album too. for sure.
that said, gord looked like he was struggling with the delivery at the phoenix show i saw. not shocked though as it sounds tough.
its average. I like the lyrics more than I like the music

Exactly...I think the lyrics are good, but musically it doesn't do a lot for me. I have to agree with others here that Gord's vocal performance on WC is awesome, perhaps his best yet, but for me there are so many better songs on WC than Fly. I'm not trying to bash the tune - it's not bad - but I think they did a lot of really good things musically on WC (the piano on YNTO, for example) but Fly doesn't have anything, IMHO, that makes it stand out.
Love it! Great song, and one of my favorites on the album.
Yeah, well I just don't get all the love for it. It's probably going to be a song the play live all the time though, and I'll never want to hear it again, just like NOIS. And I realize I'm walking the thin line of blasphemy by saying that.
