Full Version: Why are Hip CDs so cheap?

I've noticed that Hip CDs are so damn cheap brand new (albums before IVL can be easily had for less than $12 CDN). Does anyone know why this is? I haven't seen IVL or IBE at such a price, but with the new album out, will they go for cheap too now?

I'm not complaining, by the way, it's great for a student like me to be able to own their back catalogue without spending a fortune. But I kinda feel like I'm ripping the band off. I mean, the spectacular quality of their music for such a low price... it's almost unjust!
Don't worry, you're not ripping the band off. Most CDs are ridiculously overpriced.
C'mon now. I'm sure they'll take donations via the website if you feel that bad. MAv ... is there some kinda pay-pal set up?

CDs are cheaper now when first released because if they weren't people would buy iTunes. The earlier ones are going cheap because of supply and demand -- there's a warehouse somewhere with thousands of copies of Road Apples in it and you and me and everyone here already have a copy of it.

I think you were just being tongue in cheek about ripping off the band, but somebody's still making money on these things. The profit margin is getting smaller, is all.

if you want to feel you're ripping someone off... it would be the label!

Not on the back catalogue. The nonrecurring costs are all long since absorbed, and the promotional costs are zero. Catalogue is the record label's cash cow.

Well, you're saying the profit is still 100%, but I'm saying the profit is smaller than if they were charging $14.99 for it, say. But, I don't pretend to understand the record industry, so I may be making stuff up.

I think they should be promoting Road Apples. It's a hell of an album. That Cordelia song is great.

You work at that warehouse, don't you? How about hooking a buddy up with 2,000 copies of Road Apples for guerrila marketing purposes?
I can get you a crate of 5,000 for (.... whats $9.99 times 5,000 ... carry the four ...) $49,950 minus the 10% Hipbase discount.

Also, we've tried marketing to gorillas with little success, but knock yourself out.

I paid $17.98 + tax for WC. Ah the joys of living in a small town. Guess it all balances out. As someone once said, "what's grippin' the city, ain't hittin' the town" Smile
