Stupid question that probably doesn't deserve it's own thread, but thehip.com says that "It will be released in Canada on Tuesday October 17th." There is a U.S. release date, or am I going to have to import this?

The last Hip CD that wasn't released in the US on the same day as it was in Canada was Day for Night. I think the Canadian release was Nov 1994 and the US release was Feb/Mar 1995.
Starting with Henhouse I think every album has been released simultaneously in both countries. Although they have changed labels in the US a dozen times the release dates have remained the same with Canada. I think I had to order LBU over the phone in 1997 because there was no US distributor, and maybe the Box Set came out a day early in Canada last year, but outside of that we should see it on 10/17/06 as well.
