Ty's Story

just returned from Hampton, New Brunswick, where I spent the last three days celebrating the life of my cousin, Tyler Henderson. Tyler was born on February 5, 1986 to my Aunt Mariya and Uncle Ross. On July 1, 2006 after enjoying The Tragically Hip at an outdoor concert with his friends in PEI, Tyler was struck and killed by an impaired driver as he walked towards his campsite.

He was my aunt's son.

He was Tara and Matthew's brother.

He was Katelyn's boyfriend.

He was my cousin.

His death was tragic, pointless and more painful than words can describe. However, over the last three days I have learned about strength, community, friendship and the power of family bonds. I found myself being comforted BY my Aunt. I saw her smile with fond memories, laugh as Tyler's friends shared some of his goofy stories and told how he had invented the word "Adverney" which is the perfect balance between an Adventure and a Journey. I watched his friends dance, play music and sing in the back yard as if he was right in there with them. The road ahead for my Aunt, Uncle and cousins Tara and Matt is paved with sorrow, tears and heartache, but I hope they look back on this celebration and remember how much they are loved by so many people.

As said best by his friends at his funeral - Tyler lived by the motto "Life's a Garden...Dig It!" You know what? I think I will.

Please remember Ty and spread the message at your concerts that drinking & driving are not okay!

Thank you, Silvana Dereski (Ty's aunt)
Oh my gosh, I just got chills reading that. Thanks for posting that here, and on thehip.com....I hope the message gets through to a lot of people.

I can't even imagine what I'd do if that ever happened to one of my friends or family. My thoughts are with the family.
Wow...words cannot even describe...just wow.

If Nadia or Silvana or any of Ty's friends or family read this board, please know that our thoughts and sympathys are with you. Something like that just shouldn't happen anymore these days. Cry
Wow, what a reality check!

Here I was getting hyper over my holiday next week...

To all of Ty's friends and family, you're in my (and all of our) thoughts.
Wow. Straight from the heart. I can't imagine the sorrow. Even though I was only one of the 8000 people at the show that weekend, I'm glad he got to enjoy the show with his fellow Hip fans...

My thoughts go out to Ty's family and friends...
Carpe Diem folks, seize the day! Wow, I might have run into that guy without even knowing it that day. Now he's gone. Very, very sad.

A better choice of words is needed.....
wow, what a tragic story and such a waste of life. Our thoughts are with the family.
We're aw Jock Tamson's Bairns.

My sympathy and love to Ty's family.
sorry to hear that, my thoughts are with his family & friends
Sad story, I'm sure if the Hip are informed about this that they would commemorate him in some way during a future show.
Living 10 minutes outside of Hampton, I have been aware of this for quite some time. My sister and him have met before, and the story is truly gutwrenching. Tyler had several friends in the Quispamsis/Rothesay region (where I live) and I know people who were affected by this horrific tragedy.

It is never easy to see anybody go.

This may be alot to ask MAv, but is it at all possible that the boys in the band can do something for this family?

it would be good if they knew, as i'm sure they probably already do. as long as the ball is in their court.
