i know in the past some of gord downies rants have been turned into songs (see: double suicide/locked) - i was wondering about on the last tour. I mean, on TNIT he sings part of the new maybe, and "love is a curse" sounded pretty formed at points, so im wondering whats going to come from it. any opinions?
I find this has always been a Downie trend. Sometimes it takes a while for a rant to be incorporated into a song, for example, I remember listening to a boot from around 93, and Gord says "yeah! interstate brickface!", and that didn't make it into a song until 1997 (released in 98 ).
At the Stones concert last year, Gord was singing "Even nothing! Even nothing! Even nothing but you!" a heck of a lot, so my interest is peaked for the next album as to if this will be incorporated too.
Well the dorsil fin rant from the end of poets / nois finally made it into Heart of the Melt....(gee it would be cool if they played that song live
)
The woodstock show has a lot of "The Bastard" coming through if I remember right....
This is why being a hip fan rules, we get to see the evolution of songs...anyways....if any rant makes it to the next album I hope it's the 'Drink to Drop" from the end of Lake Fever from the London show...
There was also "I'll do anything for you, anything for you...almost anything" rant which is on one of the livedownload shows.
And who can forget the Mircophone Stand rant? He did a longer version of it at the Edmonton show...so who knows
Actually, I saw in an interview with the Hip (not G Downie) and when they were asked about Gords ranting and where it comes from R Baker said he gets most of his rants from the songs in progress or Gords poetry.
Going from this, I don't think they turn gords rants into songs. It seems to have more to do with him hinting at new material or just what new material is fresh in his head. So Gords rants are, for the most part, already being put into songs and when u finally hear the song, it sparks your memory a bit. Atleast it gives us a good idea of what to expect in the future of hip songs

It's not always original material, I know recently he's been reciting Weakerthen lyrics, or Nick Drake lyrics. And im still trying to figure out whether the "And If You Do, I'll come back and Marry You" he sings at the end of Bobcaygeon is him quoting Guided By Voices or just a coincidence

Another good point. He's pretty well known for reciting other bands lyrics.
He's been quoted as saying he has a notebook with him at all times, writing things down. Undoubtably, they are just phrases and fragments that come to him. Probably those types of things he spits out in concert, and then later mashes together a bunch into a song......
A song's lyrics probably look nothing like at the end what they do at the begining on some tunes......
But fragment finding is cool. Kinda like an easter egg....
