Today the season for trout is open in southern ontario, weehooooo! I cant wait so many rivers and so little time. If you see a blue saturn flying on the 400 series give a wave. Plus it is hard to explain where trout reside, but most time it is almost like a secret garden. you have to go and explore. Does anyone here fish or fly fish?

Yup. I usually give the opener a miss these days, due to crowds, but I'll be out today.

If you should happen to see a nondescript vehicle near an undisclosed location somewhere in southern Ont, it won't be me. Just keep driving. There are no trout there.

I live in Western North Carolina..the season opened a couple of weeks ago. The Brook trout seem to be coming back really well...what do you all have up there?

As local trout geek, I'm compelled to point out that the fish is a brookie. But it's a nice one.

In answer to your question, in Ontario we have much the same as you: brookies and browns and rainbows. and bass and all kinds of other warmwater stuff in warmer waters.

But we get migratory rainbows from the Great Lakes, which generally don't return to rivers until they reach 18 inches and which we call steelhead, as they do on the West Coast. So there is a big-fish trout fishery here that's unique to the Great Lakes.

Oh, and we also just launched a big program to restore the Atlantic salmon to Lake Ontario, where it was wiped out over a century ago.
