Who would you say are the best, or just your favorite, guitarists ever?

I'll start off with mine...

Eric Clapton, Trey Anastasio (Phish), and Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits)

I just finished watching the Eric Clapton: Crossroads Guitar Festival DVD and I'm in a guitar mood.
Hendrix, Allman, Clapton spring to mind.

Here's an old thread with some other opinions...

Of course the people you'd expect like Clapton, Hendrix, Page, Van Halen, etc. etc.

But a guy which barely ever comes up on any of these lists i see which i feel should...

Randy Bachman
In alphabetical order, since my favorite technical gutarists are not necessarily my favorite from a writing standpoint, or in terms of "soul" or "feel", etc:

Lindsey Buckingham
Eric Clapton
Jerry Douglas (on dobro)
David Gilmour
Jimi Hendrix
Mark Knopfler
David Navarro
Jimmy Page
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Angus Young

very true, he's a great guitarist, Alex Lifeson is another underrated guitarist as well. And I also like Steve Howe from Yes
To replenish my list...

Trey Anastasio
Eric Clapton
Mark Knopfler
Robert Randolph
David Gilmore
Joe Walsh (Eagles)
Buddy Guy
BB King
Carlos Santana
Jimmy Page
JJ Cale (Wrote "Cocaine" and "After Midnight", which Eric Clapton covered)
David Gilmore
Justin King (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=...ng&pl=true)
Randy Bachman
John Angus MacDonald (The Trews)
Steve Vai
I could go on and on...

Also, what do you guys think about Steve Vai, I know all he does is shread, but I think he might be the best, based on difficulty.
I find it a slightly amusing that Rob Baker never comes up in these lists. :? If it was a list of best technical guitar players or great players with the most difficulty he'd be nowhere near the top but I figured someone would list him since we all love the Hip. If JA Macdonald is listed, Robby's gotta be listed so I'll add him to my list. Big Grin

Rob Baker

Jeff Beck would have to be high on any guitar list also.
Hey, I'm from Antigonish, home of The Trews...Couldn't resist

Also, I figured Bob Rock was a given

I like John Angus. He's a showman and he's talented. The band members are freaks but they perform well live so it's all good.

Bob Rock will never be on a guitar list of mine! NEVER!
Randy Rhoads
Jimmy Page..master of the riff
Slash
Clapton
Jack White
David Gilmour
I've been listening to a lot of Queen lately...I'm not sure if I should feel shame about that or not......NO I will feel no shame....I am a fan of Queen.

Therefore, I have to add Brian May to the list, that guy could play the guitar with some serious tone...very underrated in my opinion.

Knoppfler and Gilmour also get my vote...very solid players.

RG
My favorites, in no particular order:

Slash
John Frusciante
Jimmy Page
The Edge
Mike McCready
Bruce Cockburn
Randy Bachman
Neil Young
Clapton
Hendrix
Trent Carr (Headstones)
Ian Blurton (the king of loud, ear bleedin' kick-yer-ass riffage)
Ani Difranco (say what you want about her music, but this chick plays a mean acoustic guitar)
Angus Young

And last but not least, the criminally underrated Robby Baker. I always scratch my head as to why he never makes anybody's list. Sure, he's not flashy, and he doesn't play at blinding speeds like Slash or Eddie Van Halen, But with the Hip's style, he doesn't need to do any of that stuff. His solos are always smooth, soulful, emotional, and they serve the songs beautifully. So because he doesn't "shred", does that make him nothing more than an average guitarist? I think not.

I'd have to agree. Watch him play his lick during "Summer Is Killing Us" on That Night In Toronto. That solo is smooth.
