I just did a search, and found nothing on the first two pages. I understand that we're all about "beating down the new people" who ask semi-silly or repeated questions, but I don't know the answer either and i've been here a while. Maybe we need to lighten up, or just have a general stickied "Quick Hip Questions" thread. That way, when people post threads like these, you can sarcastically direct them to that thread, instead of confusing and embarrasing them.

the search feature of PHPBB sucks. . . . my 2 cents.
I think it should be common knowledge that searching rarely does anything. So what if someone starts a thread thats the same as a topic that was in a thread that was made 10 months ago. Thats no biggie to me.
I did a simple search using the following terms in the search field with the Search for any terms or use query as entered option selected: "guitars" AND "use". I immediately found a thread entitled "Gord's Guitar" in the Music and Musician discussion. GORD'S GUITAR is the freaking TITLE for christ sakes. The search yielded only 12 results.

How difficult is that?

Answer: It's not difficult. The problem isn't the search feature; the problem is sheer laziness and a blatant neglect of simple thought & imagination.

Maybe we should post all of the contact information for Hipbase members - or maybe just the more knowledgeable members - so that any questions about the Hip can be addressed directly (via phone or a personal meeting) so that there's no issue of people wasting bandwidth (or whatever the hell the problem is). Hell, we could just dismantle the Hipbase altogether and have a daily meeting group to discuss the Hip without even using computers! Surely that would solve these problems.

If we don't dismantle this site, we should at the very least ban new members, since these people are more often ignorant of the very strict rules we (you) have here at the Hipbase.

Seriously, people need to lighten up. This place is very hostile to new (or newish) members - it's a common occurrence here for someone to ask a question and get bitched at for starting a new thread. It's kind of sad that some people care enough to be sarcastic or rude to a fellow fan, in a forum that's supposed to be welcoming and conducive to discussion.

I see so many of you bitch about multiple Threads, don't you have anything better to do with your life than that?
Sorry about pissing so many of you off.
do we have spell check police as well? :thumb:

Oh this ol' argument again. I've tried this here, and on other boards before, but the general populous just don't buy this kind of logic.

Honestly, THR, it doesn't piss me off when someone starts a new thread on a topic that's been covered. It does get annoying, but I can deal with it without responding with anything that might be construed as "mean" or "hostile" or "rude".

But what does piss me off is when someone responds by suggesting that you might want to do a search to obtain the information you seek, because - mmmm...i dunno.... - because maybe they *know* it's been covered, and that looking it up *might* yield quicker results than simply waiting for people take the time and effort to post answers just for you without lifiting a finger?

I mean, don't you think that after 4 years in existence, a forum devoted to THE TRAGICALLY HIP would have surely witnessed the discussion of what freaking instruments they play?

Again, I can ignore the lapse, or the laziness involved, but when people then start to make excuses in defense of that utter laziness, or that thoughtlessness, and go a step further and accuse those who suggest doing a search of "rudeness" or "pettiness", i must admit, it does piss me off.

Here's a novel idea for those of who who are so sensitive that when people point out that you have been lazy or thoughtless (ceebueler): take a minute, use that noodle in your head, and admit to yourself, "yeah, maybe i (he /she) should try this 'thinking' thing more often, because it only makes good sense".

Your spending more time Ranting at me then it would have taken you to say "I bellive Gord plays ___________ Guitars"
You know, if all anyone ever does is use the search feature to dig out what was said in the past, we won't see much in the way of new info, will we?

Maybe we could just lock the place down and ban new posts?

Seriously, the topic may have been covered before, but why so averse to covering it again? This is not one of those things that comes up here once a month.
