After reading an article on the web, it appears that going solo seems to be a big trend up here, at least in the writers opinion it is. Not sure where he was going with the article but Canadian artists have a history of going solo it seems lately I suppose. But is it a Canadian thing? Does it happen here more than anywhere else. I dont really care, but anyways..

Here's a few I can think of, off the top of my head..

Matthew Good Band- Matt Good
Blue Rodeo- Jim Cuddy did a solo album or two, Greg Keelor did one last year as well.
Moist- David Usher (Moist was bad enough, please stop)
I Mother Earth- Edwin (where the hell is this guy anyway?)
I Mother Earth- Bryan Byrne (please god get back with IME your solo music stinks, and if I dont hear One More Astronaut live again Ill die!)
The Tea Party- Jeff Martin, new solo album due soon.
The Tragically Hip- Gord Downie
Barenaked Ladies- Steven Page

Obviously some have stayed with their respective bands, and Im sure we could trace this back years and name a bunch of others. Im not saying its a bad thing or anything just seemed like an interesting topic. I dont like all of those artists solo work, but there is some real good talent up here and I think its great that these individuals continue to make music. For instance I was pissed when MGB busted but at least MG kept it going and the man has great talent for music and songwriting and his solo work is fantastic, so at least in a way MGB really didnt go away. Same with Thornley/Big Wreck and Im hoping Jeff Martin's new album will live up to the hype as I was a big Tea Party fan and I hear this new work really echoes the TP music of old. At least something good can come from a band breakup sometimes, it helps lessen the blow.

Amy Millan from Stars is putting out a solo album, I'm really excited. Her voice is so orgasmic :jump

BTW, did anyone purchase the new Jeff Martin solo album yet? I just read a review on canoe.ca and am curious if anyone has heard it yet.

I got it yesterday, but haven't really gave it a full listen yet. The couple songs I did hear were pretty good, if you liked The Tea Party, I think you'll like this album.

He's touring as well if anyone's interested, here's some dates..

Kevin Hearn went solo from Barenaked Ladies with Thinbuckle and so did Martin Tielli from the Rheostatics.

It's nice when artists go solo to see a mix of individuality as well as a part of their contribution as a whole to their respective bands. Even if you don't like all of it, it's different, and that counts for something.

Ive been giving this album some good listens this week, and I have to say its quite good. Im a big Tea Party fan so I might be biased here. The album sounds and feels like a TP album, but with the amps turned down. The best way to describe it I think is Tea Party Lite if that makes sense. The song writing is vintage Jeff Martin no surprises there, and the song arrangements are typical, with the usual Eastern influences that TP used frequently, just dont expect any heavy guitars. Its definitely worth buying, especially if you live near a Future Shop its only 9.99 and you're a Tea Party fan.

Too bad he doesn't list a tour date for London. The Tea Party were great live.

The Tea Party were always awesome live, Im really going to miss seeing them play live anymore, its a shame when bands split like this. If Jeff ever decides to come round here, we'll have to go check him out Skip.
