Okay, so I've decided to make sure I possess every Tragically Hip song on my iTunes. Not so simple as it sounds, though.
There are a lot of arbitrary decisions to be made. For instance, I've decided to include Gord's solo work but not sure if I'll use Bobby's. I will include jokes like Edelweiss but don't think I'll include the national anthem.
So, I thought I'd throw a few questions out there.
1) If you were doing this, what would be out and what would be in?
2) For the fans familiar with more bootlegs than I am, what are some songs that have changed so much that you could refer to them as a different version of the song? For example, live Poets with "Bring out your dead" and "writers who get laid" and "swim" is sort of the Poets: Director's cut, so it will go in the collection, where as a really good live version of Bobcaygeon with an extra Gord extro probably wouldn't, as that's sort of part and parcel of the live experience, but not necessarily a new song in its own right. Exceptions will be made for Killerwhaletank and Double Suicide as they have taken on a life of their own. (See how complicated this can be?)
Other songs that have changed enough to be considered different versions of the song in my mind are the double-time Hundredth Meridian and Fire in the Hole with Burning Church intro. Are there others?
3) I don't want every song with them on it, so what couple of songs changed the most thanks to Kate Fenner and Chris Brown?
4) Are there any songs known to have been performed by the Hip that are not recorded anywhere? (Limelight excluded.)

You've set yourself up for quite a task, and there's so much material to consider. I'd try to limit your choices to soundboard/broadcast quality boots for starters.

NOIS from Gino's... 'cause it has the "starry nights/blurry lights" and "if you're freaked I'm fucked" refrains.
NOIS version with the "cookie factory/west wind/dirty ABAC"
There are some great M@W rants on the ACC NYD 2000 TTH & Friends recording along with the absolute best version of Lake Fever ever recorded anywhere. The Poets intro is exceptionally cool:

As an FYI, Scottitude, the second verse of that intro appears in poem form in "I Wonder What I Thought I'd Do" in CMG. Lovely little piece.

Just remembered another "must have"...
The Hip's cover of Bob Dylan's "Seven Days", from Hengelo 1991-05-24. Come to think of it, that entire boot is a must have........
Some of my personal faves:
"Black Day in July" from the Gordon Lightfoot tribute album. The boys really attack the song with a lot of gusto, and it sounds amazing. Gord's vocals are especially brilliant on this tune.
"Last of the Unplucked Gems" from Ottawa, 07/26/93. One of the coolest mid-song rants ever.
"Fight" with Blues Traveler's John Popper on harmonica, ARA '95.
"So Hard Done By" with Steve Berlin on tenor sax, House of Blues, Chicago 07/19/02.
Anything with Kate Fenner from the Evening With tour in 2000, particularly "Flamenco", "Scared", or "Yawning or Snarling".
"Antares"- A really cool intstrumental track that Kurt Browning skated to during one of the Stars on Ice tours.
