Not to detract from TDC's eloquent argument, but I have a local toss up to offer. My first vote goes to a now defunct Philly act called Stargazer Lily. Female lead vocalist, catchy lyrics, nice bass work. I was not a happy camper when they broke up. My second vote goes to another local act by the name of Ike. The frontman, John Faye, used to be in The Caulfields. If I recall correctly, they opened for The Hip at some point. Somewhere in the recesses of the board there's a thread about opening acts, and I am pretty sure someone mentioned The Caulfields. If anyone's interested in hearing any of these acts, PM me and I'll hook ya up. :thumb:
Erhm...also, The Weakerthans. I feel that statement stands on its own.
It would seem I'm not very good at selecting one band...

Halifax pumped out another great band called The Flashing Lights, unfortunately they're no longer together. If you can still get your hands on a disc it would definitely be worth your time to give it a spin.

yeah, i've seen the flashing lights a number of times too, didn't pick up anything they recorded yet though. they definitely put on a good show!
the Smalls RIP
These guys would come, tear it up big time, whip the crowd into a frenzy and leave you totally spent with their legendary live shows. How they didn't ever break is well beyond me....Up until his last CD, their old bassman Corb Lund put on a great show, now he's famous and much more country than I think he should be, but if you can catch him in a small venue, he's great
opiated Wrote:a band that gets little to no recognition...for me it would be Gomez...album after album of consistent, bluesy, eclectic, brilliant music...and one of the greatest live acts i've ever seen
I second that vote for Gomez....such an amazing band! Their sound is totally original and refreshing. Unfortunately I have never seen them live but they are one of the few bands that can just "take me away" when I listen to them. I am so glad my brother introduced me to these guys because I doubt I would have ever heard of them otherwise. Bring It On is still one of the best discs ever.
Either "Vista Interna" OR
simply one song by David Bowie that most people probably havn't heard. "I'm Afraid Of Americans". I pretty much climax everytime I listen to it.

Dude, use your inside voice when you feeling like sharing info like that. Please.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah followed closely by Neutral Milk Hotel. Brilliant albums.

The Weakerthans
I would go to the thread I resurrected about 40 minutes ago, indie pop-rock powerhouses The New Pornographers.
I read in a review something to the effect of "They keep getting older but keep making music for teenagers to dance to."
If that doesn't make you want to listen to them, I don't know what would.
Them not having "broken" in Canada is beyond me, though "Use It" is getting a lot of play on edge 102 these days.
As well, The Weakerthans, whose merits I have touted serveral times.
Kings of Leon
This band is one that I have recently really gotten into. The vocals can be hard to get used to, though. I think they might be a band that you either love or hate.

Same here! I almost picked them, but figured that since they opened for some of the U2 shows that they have gotten in front of a wider audience than Elbow. But KOL rules!
Current favourites of mine include The Weakerthans, Death Cab For Cutie and Rilo Kiley.
