what a great version of Helter Skelter..i didn't know he still had it in him..great band he's got playing with him..i'd like to see Kanye, or the black eyed peas still doin that at his age..(actually..no..no i wouldn't...)

and as for madonna, what an embarassing lip-synched joke
i would just like to point out, that i made the above comment before seeing him with Jay Z and linkin park

Agreed.

I didn't think Madonna was all that bad, and I also don't think she lip synched. There were two instances that I can recall that she pulled the mic away from her face and there were no main vocals, but there was a background (pre-recorded?) voice that sounded like Madonna... and I've heard that performers use a technique like that live so their own voice doesn't sound too thin or off-key. I thought she was quite good.

I also thought the performances were kicked up a notch this year as compared to in the past. I could have done without Mariah's drama-queen arm waving song though... but meh, overall it wasn't that bad.

I was shocked that Kelly Clarkson took the awards she did, especially considering the company she was keeping in her categories. I never thought she'd win; I still don't think she should have.

Technique?

A safety net consisting of a pre-recorded vocal track to enrich her own voice and keep herself on key?

Yeah, I'm familiar with that "technique". It's called "deceiving the audience so they don't know you suck too bad to give a good live performance".
madonna was lip synching for sure at the start of her "performance", and for sure at the end..the middle part i'm not so sure about, as the vocals seemed to dip down a little in quality...

Well she's never been known for her strong vocals, lol. I guess I took a huge liberty using the word 'technique'. But she also did a fair amount of dancing on stage too and all that... but BLAH I'm done defending Madonna, I agree with you more than myself!
sorry MP@W. You kinda left that door open and i had to walk through it!

But i do have quite a bit of respect for Madonna though - as a pop icon - not especially as a vocalist, per se.

She had the smarts and the acumen to recognize that there was a huge market out there that was hers for the taking and she jumped right into it with both.....uh...feet.
