just wondering if there are any other tom waits fans around...favourite songs, albums?...
Oooh! *raises hand* I'm a huge Tom Waits fan. I know there have been a few misc. music threads discussing his work. I really love my import of Asylum Years. My 5 favorite songs, off the top of my head at the moment are: Fall of Troy, Martha, Gun Street Girl, Time, I Don't Wanna Grow Up.

yeah, like jenna says, the Waits topic has been kicked around quite a bit on this board. do a search, and it oughta turn up quite a bit of random discussion.

I'm a big fan too. I like most everything he's done. He's so prolific, yet everything he touches seems to turn to gold. That's rare.

Recently, i've been really into Mule Variations. Spooky-good.

And at risk of sounding like a stakeholder in the PBS program Austin City Limits, i always recommend an episode featuring Waits circa 1979 to his fans, because it is simply incredible. Don't know where you might find it, but if you ever see it in your TV guide or a DVD somewhere, by all means - watch it or buy it . You'll be glad you did.
a couple weeks ago on PBS they were showing a Roy Orbison tribute concert and Waits was there, they interviewed him afterwards and I was surprised he could stand up, he was tanked
he's got that pure mad scientist genius thing goin on

i love 'nighthawks at the diner'

Tom Waits Teases Announcement With Mysterious 'Pirate' Photo
Wearing an eyepatch, singer-songwriter grants 'permission to come aboard'

A very mysterious press release from Tom Waits landed in our inboxes this morning at exactly 10 a.m. The subject line reads: "Tom Waits: Permission to Come Aboard," and attached is a photo of the songwriter dressed as a pirate, complete with an eyepatch and a sword. The only words are "Coming August 7th."

A rep for Waits has not returned our request seeking comment on the teaser, which is clearly meant to get his fans guessing. So, post your best guesses in the comment section. Is Waits announcing a tour? He did perform on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and The Late Show with David Letterman earlier this month, and he has yet to tour beyond his 2011 LP, Bad As Me.

Taken more literally, Waits could actually be announcing a Tom Waits cruise next week. That may seem ludicrous, but if Pulp are doing a cruise, anything is possible.

Tour!!!

If this man comes anywhere near Calgary this time (Vancouver, Seattle, etc..), I'll be there.
Damn, all that teasing just to release a video? Bummer. I was really hoping for a tour announcement. Cool video though. Not to mention one of the most badass songs ever recorded:

Tom Waits - On The Simpsons

If apocalyptic calamity ever hits Springfield, Homer Simpson will be in good, soulful hands.

Singer-songwriter Tom Waits will lend his distinctive voice to The Simpsons‘ upcoming Season 24, playing himself as someone who helps introduce Homer to a community of survivalists, executive producer Al Jean tells TVLine exclusively.

“We did a lot of research into the ‘prepper’ phenomenon, where people are convinced that some horrible catastrophe – like an electromagnetic pulse – is going to occur, and that people will have to survive without the grid,” he says. So naturally, “Homer becomes a prepper.”

Jean says that the Grammy-winning Waits won’t sing in the episode, titled “Homer Goes to Prep School,” but fans will recognize the singer’s trademark growl “in a second.”

Waits is the latest addition to the sitcom’s long list of Season 24 guest voices, which includes Justin Bieber, Edward Norton, Fred Armisen, Zoey Deschanel, Benedict Cumberbatch and Patton Oswalt.

Waits’ episode is slated to air sometime in December.
