Today, Monday January 23rd, is election day. Please go and vote. We've all heard the cliches, we've all fallen asleep during the civics class, and we all know that young men and women gave their lives for this imperfect but important democracy. As somebody who is currently working on a campaign, I can tell you that over the past two months, an incredible amount of hours have been invested by volunteers, students, senior citizens, parents and grand parents of all political stripes.

Your vote does matter. In my riding, 34 polls were won by 5 votes or less, two were decided by a single vote, and one tied. People who claim that all politicians are crooks and folks who only care about their own personal well-being are just plain ignorant and selfish. Make a difference, give a damn, go out and vote.

Like it or not, the decisions made on Parliament Hill will affect you. The tuition you pay, the army you join, the child care you use and the medical system you need are all issues in this election. We live in a country that is fortunate enough to be arguing over how to spend a surplus, cut taxes and improve a publicly funded medicare system. We are indeed a nation blessed.

Polls close at 9:30pm tonight, and you're legally allowed up to 3 hours off from work today to go out and vote. You just need to go to your local polling station with two pieces of I.D. Go vote.

"It's the perfect time now, for an eclectic choice, they're all asleep but us now, it's time to hear your voice."
Thanx for the reminder. I haven't missed voting yet, and don't ever plan to. You'd be doing a disservice to your country if you didn't give your vote. And, to all the new young voters: There's no reason you shouldn't be voting, give it your time.
I am heading to the polls around noon. I am getting the feeling that voter turnout will be higher this election, and I think you will see an increase in the youth vote. As the political junky in my group of friends, my previsouly disengaged buddies have been coming to me to find out where, and how to vote.

Hopefully they are leaning the same way as me. But if not I suppose thats why its a democracy.

Go Vote!

Speaking of youth vote, I read about a group that is trying to lower the voting age to 16. I guess the main arguement was that other people get to determine their/our future. Anyways, it was a decent read. And no, there is no point to this post.

I would like to read that if you could point me towards it. My thoughts without reading the article is that it is an unnecessary change to the elctorate. Those aged 18-25 represent the least-engaged part of the elecorate as it is. I think that if we can get that section of the population to start going to the polls, then we can think about lowering the voting age. Just my opinion of course.

Thoughts?
Got this email today....

Martin, Harper and Layton are flying on the Executive Airbus to a gathering in British Columbia when Martin turns to Harper and says, "You know, I could throw a $1000 bill out the window right now and make someone very happy."

Harper shrugs and replies, "Well, I could throw ten $100 bills out the window and make ten people happy." Not to be outdone, Layton says, "Well I could throw a hundred $10 bills out the window and make a hundred people happy." The pilot rolls his eyes and says to his co-pilot, "Arrogant asses back there. Hell, I could throw all three of them out the window and make 32 million people happy."
I voted in an advance poll last weekend. I wasn't real thrilled about any of my choices, but as Rick Mercer put it, if you don't try to choose the lesser of the evils, it means you support evil. Or something like that.

Meanwhile, Macleans magazine would have us believe that the voting age should be raised, because 18 year-olds aren't mature enough to vote.
Has Macleans magazine been purchased recently by morons? I haven't read a decent cover story in that magazine in over a year.

Off to vote tonight after work. I haven't missed a voting day since I turned 18. I went out to vote the day after my daughter was born. Nothing will stop me from voting.
It hasn't been bought out recently, but Kenneth Whyte, formerly of the Irrational Post, has taken over as editor and is morphing it into a magazine version of the Post.

And we all saw how well the Post did.

Expect to see Rogers sell Maclean's to Canwest. Smile
i just got in from voting, i hope my team wins!
Just got back from the voting booth. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have a "none of the above" option. Oh well.
