I love the lyrics for Nautical Disaster and Bobcaygeon and Fireworks.
The part I love is when Gord introduces Nautical
"No Canadian band, no Canadian band would be complete without a song about a nautical disaster this is a song about a nautical disaster and it's called Nautical Disaster. :thumb:
Simply impossible to pick a favorite, but here are a few I thought of immediately.
Sharks
Sharks don’t attack the Irish,
it’s mostly Australians.
Leave
'I dunno...but why suppose
it's not the way it should be?
When you can fly above the great waiting list,
as the crow implies we won't be missed,
Fiddler's Green
September Seventeen
For a girl I know, it's Mother's Day
Her son has gone alee
And that's where he will stay
Wind on the weathervane
Tearing blue eyes sailor-mean
As Falstaff sings a sorrowful refrain
For a boy in Fiddler's Green
His tiny knotted heart
Well I guess it never worked to good
The timber tore apart
And the water gorged the wood
You can hear the whispered prayer
For men at masts that always lean
That the same wind that moves her hair
Moves her boy through Fiddler's Green
He doesn't know a soul
And there's nowhere that he's really been
But he won't travel long alone
No, not in Fiddler's Green
Balloons all filled with rain
As children's eyes turn sleepy-mean
And Falstaff sings a sorrowful refrain
For a boy in Fiddler's Green
Truth be told Jerry, I might have to agree with you about Fiddlers Green.
It is such a deep and powerful ballad. I remeber the first time I heard it and read along to the lyrics on Road Apples, that I had a huge lump in my throat and maybe even a tear in my eye.
Truly one of the best, and am I ever glad it made it onto the list for Yer Favorites.
Looking forward to the upcoming tour!!!!
Hip Forever!!!

I know what you mean. These lyrics (like so many Hip lyrics) somehow get right into your emotions. I think it ends up being the content of the lyrics and the emotional presentation together that hooks you.
A friend of my bought me HIPEPONYMOUS for Christmas. I was sitting with my wife and trying to show her some of my favorites, but it got ridiculous after a while.
"Listen to this one. Oh, this one's really good. Ah, you'll reall love THIS one."
In my forty years, I have never experienced a band that can hypnotize on nearly every song. Then, just after you get into their recordings, you decide to check out a live show......And we ALL know what that's like.
Great stuff.
"I'll know right away when I'm in the right place
When I see the tensed up muscles..of your face.."
"I never saw someone say that before"- Fireworks
"Kurt Cobain, reincarnated, sighs and licks his face"- Don't Wake Daddy
"I'll believe in you, or i'll be leaving you" - Obvious which these lyrics are from
And the entire Scared track
"he bought a nice blue suit with the money he could find, if his bride didn't like it St. Peter woudln't mind"- opiated
"and a girl walks by the burning bush, she asks whats gone wrong here man and he smiles, says open wide wide wide"- when the weight... atcually the entire ballad of when the weight comes down, my favourite song!!
And how could I have forgot...From the best Hip song ever...
"Mourning broke out the backside of a truck-stop, the end of a line, a real rainbow-likening luck stop" - Locked in the trunk of a car
gord is a poetic genius...there are so many gems to choose from, but when i first saw this thread one song was going through my head...from "flamenco"...
Maybe I'll go to New York
I'll drag you there
you said "no one drags me anywhere"
...i don't know why, but those lines always get me...maybe it's the way gord sings it as much as it is simply beautiful...
because i'm listening to it at the moment...
"....jaques cartier, right this way...man you've got the real bum's eye for clothes..." :thumb:
and i have to agree with jerry...
"sharks don't attack the irish
it's mostly australians" :thumb:
shakespeare, you're a drunken savage
well, you're a sober and green-eyed voltaire
it almost sounds funny
like two tough-talkin' goalies
really goin' at it upstairs...

From Cordelia:
Treading the boards, screaming out Macbeth
Just to see how much bad luck you really get
Those lines remind me of the Blackadder episode with the pompous actors and "the Scottish play;" which always makes me laugh even though the song isn't that funny.
There's nothing funnier than pride in an utterly confident stride
so I pulled the car on over to give you a ride
"Damn this sleepy weather", he said
as he marched in sopping wet shoes
through rainpools evaporationg
says in this sign "I'll conquer you."
I pulled the car on over to give you a ride
but there's nothing uglier than a man hitting his stride
--Vapour Trails
-----------------------------------
Velvet callow with wet hands
I turned out the lights and
breathing shallow hesitated
then went upstairs where
I picked up your housecoat
dried my hands and
touched your hair
and just then you awoke
you could never really barely care
--Greasy Jungle
------------------------------------
Once you've said 'mmm' in unison
and 'oh' in double surprise
and shared relief with a mutual 'phew'
and a look in each others' eyes
--Throwing Off Glass

Building up to the larger point
with an arrogance not rare or pretty
we don't declare the war on idleness
when outside it's cold and shitty.
We stay inside and try to conjure the fathers of
injured and faking
if there's glory in miracles
it's that they're reversible
--Titanic Terrarium
I'd like to buy the drink a bar
If that line isn't genius I don't know what is.
