patiodweller Wrote:This has been discussed on here several times and the consensus is ROAD APPLES. The Road Apples are amazing and have a stage presence that no other HIP cover band has. They are off the grid and it's hard to find out when they are doing a show. They sometimes play Kingston. They seem to play Westport once a year. Yes they were called Vagabond Groove back in their prime in 1995 to be exact when their song "Denial Is More than A River" got radio play. If anybody knows how to contact this band I'd love to know!

Mike Compeau is the lead singer of Road Apples. He also works as the GM and Golf Pro at the beautiful Loyalist Golf and Country Club in Bath, Ont.

He can be reached there.

nbs.
I was at the first jam for the Practically Hip and their first ever paid gig was for me and my students at Concordia University in Montreal. They were good but they oversaturated themselves in the Hamilton area. Haven't seen them in years though...
FYI: The Road Apples put on a good show at Riverfest in Brockville on July 3rd and will be in Tweed tomorrow. Join the Facebook group "ROAD APPLES"
Practically Hip wanted something in the area of 2000 for a gig. I remember seeing them on the tribute band special and wondering how many beers it would actually take before they started to sound half decent and the want to be Gord guy would become less annoying.

The Road Apples always used to play holiday weekends at AJ's in Kingston. Their guitarist is really good, the lead singer again tries to be Gord and that simply can't be replicated. I believe he and Downie are good friends. Lucky for him that he works at a very nice golf course. The best of both worlds I guess.

Although not a tribute band, Teague Purtell and bass student Brendan Reid perform their cover of "Scared"

I'm trying to think of something nice to say but Rob Zombie should never sing The Hip and the fat guy's just bad. Sorry.

There used to be (maybe there still is) a poster on the wall at the Guitar Clinic here and Sudbury, and it was a listing of all sorts of tribute bands, and I always remember seeing Radically Hip on the poster (this was back in like, 98-99).
Little Bones is by far the best tribute band I've seen. I see them every chance I can in Ottawa! The lead singer does an awesome impersonation of Gord Smile
Saw The Practically Hip in 2008 at the Hamilton Harbour for some summer festival - the lead singer had a weird southern twang to his voice that was really exaggerated - even more so than some of the Hip's early stuff... Their choice of songs was very odd - played alot of the EP and most of Up to Here (I left after about 25 minutes). Saw the documentary on them on CH TV too around the same time. I gotta say, I wish their name wasn't so close to The Tragically Hip - they definitely should not in any way be associated with them, lest they give Gord, Gord, Johnny, Rob, and Paul a bad name (then again, i imagine the Practically will soon disappear into the abyss of their own crappiness.
Hey,
David from The Radically Hip here. Cool thread...just discovered it.

I just wanted to say that if anyone is here in Vancouver during the Olympics, we're doing our official Re-Launch at the Opening night of the Olympics at the Edgewater Celebration Pavillion. We're really excited to be a part of this and even more excited to show off the new and vastly improved band. They gave us the primo closing spot for the night..Thanks Rob!

The past 4 years, we've been cruising along as a pretty good little Hip tribute band (FYI..any recording we did were when we first started..we've learned a bit since then. Watch for new ones in late Feb). We've played in a lot of really great venues and have been kept busy. Just before Christmas, Ross (the singer) and I sat down and talked about taking this band to the "Next Level". We wanted to really do it justice and to dig deeper to really hit it on the money. We had to make some very difficult decisions which found us in the market for a new lead player and a new drummer! We auditioned a lot of first rate guitar players and drummers but we all knew the ones that would come to be our new bandmates immediately upon hearing them play.

We first brought on-board a sensational guitarist named Pete Kay who just oozes tone and can hit Baker's distinctive style and nuance with frightening accuracy... and he does it so naturally. He also plays a wickked slide as well as acoustic so songs like Wheat Kings will become that much more intimate. The past few months, Pete and I have been going through much of the material, breaking it down using loopers, picking out specific riffs and re-arranging it accurately so that I'm playing precisely Paul's part while Pete is focusing on the Baker parts note for note. Its been a blast for me because I'm getting to do a lot of the signature riffs that I never got to do before! Though I'm losing the main guitar part in Long Time Running...sigh. I'll live....commitment before ego.Wink

The, last week, we brought on a stellar drummer who stood head and shoulders above many excellent drummers that vied for the spot. He hit a groove on New Orleans that just did it for us and only got more impressive as the audition wore on. Tonight we had our first full on rehearsal together and we have 9 songs down to a point of being a "significant" improvement over the way we were performing them before. Nice! 14 days till the first show and we need to put 5 more songs in the bank, stage ready. We sound a lot different today and I'm thrilled.

You have no songs post Phantom Power (i.e. made after '98), even then only Poets and ABAC. Even though I wouldn't be there, and it seems to be this way with most of the hip cover bands reading from reviews in this thread, I think some new material should be thrown in there. Most of yer shows might normally be viewed by an 'older' crowd where this type of material would be great and the entire appeal would be there, but playing this show out at the Olympics will probably draw a more diverse crowd and people would probably enjoy some of the newer tunes.

How about throwing in songs like Tiger the Lion, Putting Down, Are You Ready, Gus, Vaccination Scar, Family Band, TLEOTR, or even some of the newer hits off We Are The Same. Not necessarily the Hip's 'gems' (well maybe Hiccups>Daredevil or the Gems>Dire Wolf combo :music ) but some good songs from a more recent perspective.
Yeah, I hear ya. A few years back we did a lot more of the newer stuff and will get back there but with the new guitar player and drummer coming on over the past month, we need to focus first on the meat and potatoes of the Hip's most popular first so we can get back to work. We used to do a bunch of the newer stuff such as Gus, Vaccination Scar, In View, Music @Work, Yer Not The Ocean, The Darkest One, Love Is A First, Its a Good Life and my fav, Emperor Penguin, but the reality is that many of the lesser known songs are often be learned knowing full well that they may never be played live...that they'll most probably be for our enjoyment only.

In the end, we've discovered that even the most diehard Hip fan can have trouble with 3 full sets of Hip in a night and that as a band, our sweet spot is in doing a full on 60 minute set (or 2 X 45 mins) with all of the classic rockers that you see in the above. The problem is, that when you only have an hour, its hard to justify leaving out songs like Little Bones or BAHD to drop in something like The Darkest One which is another of my favs but in the end, we respond by playing the songs that people ask for repeatedly.

Anyway, we'll get back there.

Thanks again for the observations. They've been duely noted and appreciated.

Ciao,

David

Never, ever, ever... EVER, stop playing that song.

And come out east sometime, Halifax, it would be nice. Not sure if a Hip cover band has been around these parts.

EDIT

Oh, looking at yer location, yer actually from Vancouver. I was guessing from Ontario. Still a long shot, now even longer.
I totally agree. Emperor Penguin covers this amazingly wide palette from quiet and intimate, building into this lush, creamy, thick build to the finish, much like Nautical. There's a bunch of them that for me, are most satisfying when played around a bonfire at 3am all by myself. Those are very self indulgent moments where its done entirely from the heart. Others in that ultimate unplugged category would be songs like Fiddler's Green, Long Time Running, Its a Good Life and Scared.

I think you guys have The Dark Canucks out in your area. Better yet, why don't you pack a bunch of snow in the back of your car and bring some out here for some Olympic craziness!! Ours has all melted!
