Probably the best song I've heard in nearly a decade. Nothing's really blown me away like that since "Ahead By a Century." Different types of songs to be certain, but both have a quality that I can't describe but makes them stand about 12ft above all the other contemporay stuff on the radio.
"Good Life" and "Sharks" are kinda like that for me too... but this Matt Mays and his "Cocaine Cowgirl" kick some serious, serious ass in a hard rocking way.

I wont go as far to say its the best song Ive heard in a decade...but yeah I love that song as well, I listen to it all the time and I put it on just about every rock mix CD-R I make. And now you have me thinking...best song in the last 10 years? Its too early for that, maybe tomorrow.

Best song of the decade eh?
Well, keeping in mind that there can only be one true pioneer and all other "pioneers" make a diminished impact, I think you could argue that what Elvis did for rock and roll, Eminem did for Hip Hop. They both took an already established black American art form and made it a mainstream monster. I can't count the number of times I've seen SUV's with soccer mom's in them with some Eminem song blasting from whatever "Hot" local radio station is on... kids singing along in back. That didn't happen with Run DMC or NWA, and I count the MC Hammer/Vanilla Ice period of the early 90's as the end of the Michael Jackson pop era. I don't think many Hip Hop fans would count them either.
Elvis, MJ, Nirvana, Eminem, they all took cool and made it mainstream cool. And all but maybe Elvis (see "true pioneer" above) saw that cool killed in the process of it becoming a comodity.
So anyway, I think whatever Eminem's first big hit was, it would have to rank among the top songs from 1995-2005.
Here's a link to Matt Mays a few weeks ago in Barrie, he put on an incredible show!

he's an amazing performer and a really great guy!!
matt mays thinks hes some sort of late 70s bruce springsteen (voice anyway, but in that video he looked like steve van zandt with that bandana deal going on...)
its not.... very original. i mean even though cocaine cowgirl is a solid song, and most likely the obvious single from the record its just not... busy enough or exciting musically. and lyrically its been done before 1000 times.
but for a newer band they sure rock and are better than some other younger canadian bands that get airplay for some reason...
i dunno. el torpedo is a rad name though for a band haha. its rugged
If I had a nickel for every contemporary band (or in fact every band through history) that's "not very original," I'd be driving a much fancier car than I do.
I like these guys a lot--they're good at what they do, are great live performaers, and appear to be having a really good time being a band.
The bandana is really more Copperhead Road-era Steve Earle (at least in the video) than Steve Van Zandt, whose bandana is more of a pirate statement.

El Torpedo is a cool name just because it's so totally random. I like to think there was a lot of beer involved when they decided that was a good name for a band.
haha steve van zandt is definetly lord of the pirates. i think i've seen johnny depp duel him, in some sort of recent pirate film, when he's not busy playing dancing in the dark in his bedroom all the time.
el torpedo has this late 60's, early 70's deal to it. very southern. hopefully they can hold it up (music... not pirate status) on their sophomore album. lots of wiser's deluxe could make it better.
neil young is matt's hero and you can hear it in a lot of the music...
the debut cd was fantastic and the latest with the single "cocaine cowgirl" is solid cover to cover...not one bad tune!
he's one of the most down to earth guys you'll ever meet and so are the guys in el torpedo. i've seen them probably between 30-40 times and they just keep getting better.
the east coast's neil for the 2000's...much love for matt mays & el torpedo! :thumb:
also meant to mention i'm happy they're getting some recognition outside of nova scotia and the maritimes...they've worked pretty hard and deserve any success that comes their way...
