hello, hEnGaLo here

Just wondering what the meaning of "Fight" is?...........I have an idea ...........

........but want to see if its right .............Regards...............hEnGaLo.............................
Check Stephen Dame's site... he's got some great insights.
I've got nothing on "Fight."

Though I'd wager a wild guess and say it may have roots in not getting along with your significant other.

There used to be a girl around here claiming to be that significant other... but we won't go there. Smile

I see. I just assumed you had something on everything. Oh well, carry on... move along people, nothing to see here...

Seriously? Go there, go there!
My guess is that Gordy got in a fight with a child hood friend and got him on the ground and then let him up and the kid chased him down and gordie caught a lickin..... in one of the fight versions, ie different shows........he explains this....and in another version he says "never let em up" at the start.............I'll try to find both sons and what show there from and post it if any 1 is curouse........Regards..................hEnGaLo....
also gordie introduces the song, as im sure we all know......."Do you think I bow out cuz i think your right, or cuz i don't want to fight"............im sure we can make the connection...........
yes i am illiterate

That's it really. A poster, who knows if she was really even a girl, PM'd a bunch of us around here telling us that much of Gord's early angst was because of their failed romance at Queens University.

She e-mailed me to tell me that all the research I did into "Nautical" was for... wait for it... "naught," and claimed that "Susan" was a reference to her, and the rest of the song was something only she and Gord would understand. I guess when I wrote about the Freudian theory of women in dreams... she could relate.

Could have been true, could have been a hoax. Everybody has their own opinions.
I remember, way back in the BBS days, I chatted with this very same girl, who claimed the exact same thing.. this was around 1995 or 96. I ended up chatting with her for six or seven months, if I remember correctly. Told me what Grace, Too was about (according to her, it is not about a prostitute), told me she was Susan, etc. It was believable at the time...

Yeah, she was on the NG a few times too during the PP period. When I put up my opinion about what I hear, what speaks to me during "Grace, Too" (I don't think it's about a hooker either) she pretty much tore me a new one about how I should believe her and post the "truth."

I tend to think she's an obsessive fan, but the details she knew suggest to me that she may have actually dated Gord. My sister knows Mike Downie and her first boyfriend Chris was on MCA's payroll as a photographer for the boys through '99. I ran some of the names this poster was dropping by my sister and her gang, and they knew some of these people from the Queens/UofT party scene... so the names weren't a total fabrication.

I think she might be partially credible and partially crazy; somebody who may think they missed an opportunity at being attached to someone famous.
There was quite the kerfuffle when Stu posted an email exchange (covering much of what has already been discussed here) between the two of them. And I think her comments were "Wow, you bought it".

She's just a nut looking for attention.
Yes, I remember the big kerfluffle regarding Stu. Too bad, he hasn't really been around too much since then though I don't know if that is related...

Well, yeah, that definitely fits with "lay down seething, smell our pillows burn."

The song is "about" what the words say, now whatever externalities you want to drag into it from something Gord Downie said once in some club where someone happened to have a tape recorder.

Why does everyone want to make songs into biography? If I sing a song about breaking up, must that mean it came from some specific breakup I experienced? If I sing a song about getting in a fight, does it have to come from some specific fight I had with my girlfriend? If so, when it's released, the song is likely to cause the breakup....

These are common experiences. It's possible for a songwriter to imagine two people getting into a fight, or breaking up, or falling in love, and then write about what he imagines.

On that note, whatsherface may actually have dated Downie, but that doesn't necessarily make her the subject of his songs -- although it may be important for her to imagine that she is. Her biographical details have nothing to do with the words in the song, they're just noise.

Who said they did? Her bibliographical details support her claims of knowing Gord during the time he was at Queens. Mutual friends and the experience of another poster who has since left the 'Base support that. This "girlfriend" was able to name some of the folks known to Gord's little brother and his friends. She also actually met, according to the aformentioned former poster, with said former Hipbaser at a NY show in 2004. (I swore confidence, hence the Deep Throat BS)

Beyond that, your aversion to people delving into the songs, bibliographically or otherwise, has always puzzled me. They're not your songs, everyone enjoys them differently.

If this guy hears a certain story, good for him. It doesn't diminish anyone elses enjoyment of the song, nor does it have to be "the" explanation. There is no one explanation of many Hip songs, that's part of the appeal.

All songs are born of many roots, some of us take joy in exploring those origins. I can tell you that members of the band have encouraged me to continue doing so, and I'd wager they would say the same thing to hEnGaLo or anybody else. My thing is the references to the people, places and events which give me a greater understanding and connection to the music... and which I find just plain cool. Somebody else may want to do something else with the songs, so be it, it's art, it's out there. I've never understood your hostility to individual interpretations.

hEnGaLo, buddy, rock on my friend.
