As the credits were rolling at the end of the show it announced that a 2 hour DVD would be available, so I think they only paired down the show for broadcast purposes.

HD DVDs are not available. Yet. Although recorded in HD, the only way for a fan at home to see it in HD is with an HD cable or satellite signal. The DVD will be in standard resolution for DVDs (720 x 480 interlaced) and play fine on your standard definition TV...
HD DVDs are on their way, and new DVD players will be required to play them. A format war is also on its way as there are two competing technologies: HD-DVD (developed by Toshiba and NEC) and Blu-ray (developed by Sony).
