Why didn't this start at the beginning of the season?

I'm watching the Leafs / Flyers game and keep thinking that Kerry Fraser should be on a football field.
I'd heard this was supposed to become a regular feature at NHL games this year, but I have noticed that it seems to be inconsistent in its execution. I kind of like it myself.
We finally got one, woo!

It is weird, the refs are calling pretty much anything now, I enjoy it as well..for the moment.
Fraser had a mic on last night but the other ref didn't. Only Fraser was announcing his penalties. Plus, it seems kind of redundant since Andy Frost announced the penalties again right after him. Perhaps only certain refs have agreed to wear mics.
There are a few hiccups that are preventing Referees in all arenas from announcing the penalties.

The first one is an incompatability issue between on-ice microphones synching in with the arenas PA systems...seems like a pretty easy thing to correct as far as I can see, but some arenas' tech guys just can't get there heads around it.

The other issue, which only pertains to Ottawa and Montreal is that penalties and goals are announced in both English and French, and I guess not all
referees are bilingual.

Damn French ruining my hockey now too!!!

Goulet!!!

I've been to games in Montreal (pre-season thrashing of the Leafs) and in Ottawa (regular season thrashing of the Leafs) and it hasn't really been a problem. The refs can use whichever language they're most comfortable with. I think most people here, and certainly in Montreal, know enough of each of the official languages to get by at a hockey game.

Buddies of mine can't order dinner in French, but definitely know when an icing is "refusee" and what a penalty for "plongee" is, especially when Tie Domi takes three in a game. Smile
Does anyone actually need the ref to explain what the frigging penalty is? I mean, anyone who knows hockey?

Sounds like another attempt to cosy up to certain audiences south of a certain border....

I agree, its pointless imo. At least from my point of view, north of the 49th.
They're messing with hockey now. All thse changes, i don't like them. Hockeys so much more commercial now and less traditional.

Yeah, I agree with you Skippy. It's kind of like when Fox gave the puck a tail a few years back. That blue or red streak behind the puck. What a joke. I'd submit that even casual hockey fans know the signals for the usual penalties - tripping, hooking, slashing, interference, holding, high-sticking, roughing. You have to figure people would only be in the dark if butt-ending was called (it's a very strange signal) and how often is that called?

Yeah, but it was bound to happen sooner or later. Interest (particularly in the States) has waned, and let's face it thats where the money is. The problem is there's too many people with the power to make changes and make up rules, who care more about profit margins and money than the actual sport. But it is a business so what can you do? My advice is try not to think about it to much and keep cheering for the Habs win or lose!
