So, I've never seen The Godfather movies (pause for mocking laughter) and I started watching the "Novel For Television" version on cable. It's 9 hours over four nights, and the three movies are chopped up so that the narrative runs in chronological order.

I'm wondering what the structure is for each of the movies. Where does each begin and end?

Does "The Godfather," end with that famous door closing scene? Does "The Godfather II" open with the party at Micheal's place in Vegas? Which one does Brando die in, and for that matter do you see any of Deniro in the first flick, or is he strictly in flashbacks in Part II?

When do they whack Jar Jar Binks?

i tried to watch the godfather but it bored me to tears. i didn't watch the whole thing, and i have not seen the other 2

I think they are some of the greatest movies of all time. I ends with the door closing scene. II begins with the party at Michaels place in Vegas. Deniro only appears in number II, and Brando dies in the first one. Hope that helps.

I couldn't make it past the first one, I agree with mark, waaaaaay too boring. I didn't see what the fuss was all about. Mobster movies aren't my first choice of movie, but I still wasn't impressed. Leave it alone is my advice. Go watch Roger Rabbit instead that movie kicks ass.

Emperor Penguin looks like he's given you a few answers. I own the trilogy, which is a limited-edtion VHS box set released in 1995 and laid out in the same manner as you're watching now: chronologically from 1901-1980 on 5 tapes instead of 6.

As for the structure for each, Part One deals with the transfer of power from Brando to Pacino sometime in the late 60's/early 70's (Pacino comes back from serving in the Army). Part Two shows the life of Don Vito Corleone (played by DeNiro) from 1901 up to where Part One starts, showing how he came to America & became the Don. Part Three is set in the late 70's/early 80's and deals with Pacino's struggle to legitimize the family.

What I can do, if it helps, is quote a chronological overview of the whole story in this thread for you. It's only 5 small paragraphs and wouldn't take long at all. I'm guessing though that this won't help you find the starts & ends to each original part.

By the way, if anyone is interested, I'd be willing to part with my trilogy for a half-decent price (it originally cost me $175 but I'm not looking for anywhere near that much & offers are more than welcome). It comes in a 12" x 10" x 3" imitation-bible hard-case with a 12-page booklet and a 6th tape called "The Making Of The Trilogy". I'll post pictures if anyone's interested.

Cool, thanks guys. I have read Puzo's book, and really enjoyed it. I'm a big sucker for the 70's "auteur" era of Hollywood, but didn't really delve deeply into it when I was studying film... and that was a mistake.

From what I've seen, the first two Godfather movies are cerebral, engaging and interesting on a level that's so hard to acheive with a purely visual medium. Yet, the damn things are so subtle and so layered that you don't lose that element of imagination. I noticed Part 1 has since moved into the #1 movie of all time on both the AFI and IMBD user lists, and it's not hard to see why. The characters, even as Pacino bcomes the heartless killer that would have shamed his father, are enchanting.

The films really are that great. Part III wasn't in the TV version, so I'll have to track that down. I know it has a terrible rep, but after seeing the first two, I gotta see where the characters go.

Part III does not do the rest of the series justice at all.

That is a classic episode, one ef the best all time.

Even though I own the boxset I have never bothered to watch the third one based on what I've heard about it. I will probably watch it one day but I really have no interest to right now.

My favourite parts of any of the Godfather movies are all the flashback scenes with Robert DeNiro, they are epic, especially when he goes back to Italy and stabs the guy in the chest who killed his whole family
