Agreed. This is the worst news I've heard all week. Don't get me wrong folks, I'm just as excited to hear a new Hip album as the rest of you, but I really don't like Rock as a producer. His recording technique is all about gloss, polish, and layered production, which is the complete opposite of the Adam Kasper style which worked so brilliantly on IBE. I really hope he doesn't fuck up their songwriting process by re-arranging their songs to make them more "radio-friendly" like he does with EVERY other band he's worked with. If the album comes out sounding great, I'll eat my words. But until then I'm officially worried.

The SP word was mentioned. We are more farther down the tube than Rosie O'Donnell's career.

I would have to say "Fully Completely" is very over produced and i think alot you out there love that album.
Heck Fully Completely is my favorite Hip album.
With that said, it's not a bad thing. It worked before at least IMO and it will probably work again. IT'S THE FREAKIN HIP!!!!
It will be interesting to revisit this topic when the album is released.
This is why music is so great... no one's opinion is wrong as it's all a personal feeling towards what they hear.

I'm guessing they must have had scheduling conflicts with Kasper. I mentioned in another post that Downie said that they enjoyed the experience with Kasper so much that they were planning on doing another album with him. Obviously that ain't happening...unless of course he was talking about the album AFTER this one.

I'll reserve my final judgement for when the record's released...
...but that being said, I'm not too thrilled about this at all. no matter which direction he chooses to go in, Bob Rock sterilizes music.
he seems to have a knack for sucking the sincerity right out of it.
I'm not saying that he's a bad guy or anything - but that's the conclusion I've drawn from hearing his work.
where's Steve Albini when you need him? we may be begging for some atmosphere come next year.

I thought this thread was someone's idea of a joke. Apparently not.
I'm not impressed with Bob Rock's body of work, but if the guys in the Hip want to work with him and think it will lead to their best possible album, then for now I will trust their judgement. Who knows? Maybe we'll all be pleasantly surprised.

Obvioulsy we all remember the sonic quality of Cher's "Love Hurts", don't we? The last I checked only "Stairway to Heaven" had more radio airplay over the past 10 years.
The Cult have been one of my favorite bands since 1986. I agree 100% that Sonic Temple was very "polished and clean" and not one of my favorites (songs like Fire Woman, Edie (Ciao Baby)).
However, their self titled release in 1994 is pretty damn raw and dirty and is one of my favorite albums still to this day. On that front, Bob Rock is okay by me.
However, I too was hoping for Adam again this time around.

Metallica actually sounds better with Bob Rock producing, BUT, the songs just weren't there like on their earlier work...y'know?
OLP bites with him producing, but it could be Turner's absence...
i think the reason some of his projects turned out crappy is that some of the bands looking for his help (olp, metallica) were going through tough times having lost band members recently, and the writing recording process/dynamic was much much different than before...
i'm just trying to convince myself that this'll work out ok...
i was worried too when i read this

Good point. The Hip have been writing and playing with the same guys for their entire career. Musically they're tight as hell, and their songwriting has developed and matured to the point where they're brilliant at what they do, they know what they want, and hopefully they won't allow Rock to interfere with their songwriting process. I shudder at the thought of Rock stepping in and screwing around with Gord's lyrics or the band's arrangements. I too am trying to convince myself that this'll work out.

...interesting point, the same holds true for The Cult in 1994 and 2000. However, you could take this angle as well...
Wasn't Metallica's "Black" album the one that launched them into super-stardom with mainstream America after years of underground success? I know "Sonic Temple" did that for The Cult.
Although Love Removal Machine and Wild Flower got some radio airplay in 1986, it was Fire Woman (produced by Bob Rock) that made them a household name in 1989/90.
Yes I know the boys really don't care about ever cornering the US market, its just food for thought. I can't speak for Metallica, but reading about the egos in The Cult I think that is exactly what they wanted.
On the next tour, if Rob Baker walks on stage with a leather vest and no shirt underneath, I think we'll have our answer.

seriously... even if Kasper was booked this week... what about next week... or perhaps the week after? The dude needs to show up for a 10-20 day jam session and pull strings...
Just to summarize...
Adam Kasper:
Pearl Jam, Foo Figthers, Queens of the Stone Age, The Watchmen, Nirvana, Soundgarden...
Bob Rock:
Simple Plan, crappy OLP, the Moffats (???), David Lee Roth (??? Bet he wishes he could erase that from his portfolio), Cher, and Metallica (well, those are good albums).
Time will tell; I'm sure their new album will be fantastic, as they are gifted musicians...
It's kind of odd though, that the man who produced Cher, The Moffats and David Lee Roth is now producing the Hip...
