it's like when we had all the fires in BC 2 years ago...do you think it would have been cool the folks who lost their houses to hear Burning down the house??? no..so we stopped playing it
The disaster was not the hurricane itself, that was nature. If you read many publications, it was only natural for New Orleans to eventually sink. It's on the coast and 6 feet below sea level, with levees that can only handle a cat. 3 hurricane. And they brag about hurricanes, it's the anme of their favorite drink! The true disaster was national and local government leaders who did not prepare or react quickly, and in turn, cause a human catasrophy.
It's times like these that I am glad I live in Buffalo. No hurricanes, no earthquakes, no tornados, no mudslides, no forest fires. Just some snow and we got that well under control. 4 feet of snow in 24 hours and they don't even close the roads! Not to mention the best summers in the northeast.
BuffaloHipFan, what's your high school alma mater? I grew up in East Amherst (Ransom Oaks, to be specific). Went to Williamsville North (graduated elsewhere).
I live in Salt Lake City now, and the weather here is absolutely incredible. Utah in general does have the occasional wildfire issue in its rural areas, and SLC is supposedly sitting on top of a major fault line. So perhaps sooner or later it won't be too great to live here. But currently we have no hurricanes and no tornados (well, there was the one that ripped through downtown in '99, but tornados striking in metropolitan areas is extremely rare). We have four distinct seasons and they are all very enjoyable and manageable.
I lived most of my life in Buffalo. Except 3 years in Ft. Lauderdale and less than a year in L.A. This is the ONLY place I'd ever want to live. I went to 3 different high shools in 3 different states and ended up graduating from St. Joe's. I lived in Wellington Woods for 13 years, off Youngs Road for 6 years, in the city for 2 and a few years in Williamsville apartments. Bought a house off Casey 2 years ago. This year we had the best summer in Buffalo History. About 10 total days of rain and 20 days over 90. The remanants of Hurricane Katrina actually turned my lawn green for the first time this summer.
opiated Wrote:you'd be disgusted at the many requests we get for the song in the last couple days..i went on a tirade today about how insensitive it was, and i'm sure pissed off a lot of listeners..but it's disgusting to request it because as one caller put it.."i have a sick sense of humour"
For me, hearing the song brings me closer to the victims of the tragedy.
Some people consciously decided "New Orleans is Sinking and I dont wanna swim," some literally and some figuratively. Many still are. Hearing the lyrics transports me in my mind's eye through space and time to the tragedy's unfolding events. New imagery and interpretations of the lyrics spring to life.
Also, for me, the notion of actually considering rebuilding that City in the worst place imaginable epitomizes this sentiment of not wanting to leave, despite the obvious.
In my view, temporarily suspending radio play seems reasonable and compassionate, but to consider 'banning' the song does a great disservice to the profound imagination and forethought of The Tragically Hip, especially if you factor in the fact - that after a time for wounds to heal - it might actually attract the attention of more potential US fans just because of its 'relevance.'
I don't think anyone has every considered banning the song. People used the term banned incorrectly and it keeps popping up... let it go. It is right to not play the song for a while on the radio, the band is right to not play the song live for as long as they like.
some people in other posts indicated that the band hinted at never playing the song again.
Americans are so touchy. It's a song and like many Hip songs the lyrics may have some deeper meaning. Gord's words are usually so obtuse and off beat that it probably isn't meant as a literal translation of the events that have recently occured.
Much like the lyrical discussion here about "bobcaygeon". But keep in mind I am a novice and casual Hip fan. I have nearly all their recordings, but I am not any where near the level of fandom of many members here.
In my opinion, there is really no need to play NOIS at this particular time, and I am guessing The Hip themselves would find it rather tactless and insensitive if in fact stations did continue to play it with the ongoing devastation in New Orleans.
Why does it matter? I know I would personally be upset to hear it played right now, and I am sure those living through this ordeal would feel the same. Regardless of "when it was written", it is just not necessary right now. It has been played for years, and not to worry... will return again to the airwaves, perhaps at a more appropriate time.
Peace and Love,

New Orleans is Sinking.
That isnt changing.
I just saw Widespread Panic in Boone, and was with my friends who STILL cannot go back - they played Fishwater it ROCKED..and no one got upset at all..
FISHWATER..
Four train days
Get me back to New Orleans
Drink more fishwater there
Than any whale's mama ever seen
Alright tonight
I've been fueling my dreams eatin greens and beans
When I get back down there
I'm gonna drink more fish stew
Than all the big fishes do
And I still want more
I still want more
More...
I still want more
Gimme tonight
Gonna dream my way on back
Spend my life down there
Down on that bourbon street
Watch my money, and mind my legs down in New Orleans
Can't tell which mens is womens there
And which womens just turned me out
And I still want more
I still want more
More...
I still want more
we're playing it once again at our station and no complaints..although i had this argument with the "suits" that we banned NOIS but kept playing Rock you like a hurricane...suits..they just don't get it
A friend of mine made a mock-compilation on his livejournal entitled "Mock You Like A Hurricane". It is tasteless and he readily admits this, but the track listing is quite awesome - NOIS leads things off. Check it out.

Quite possibly the corniest thing ever.
Cranked up at a Bills tailgate at the home opener, NOIS sounded great right after American Idiot. Some people even got it.
