Anyways, I heard it is real real hard to immigrate to the CA. You have to have a net worth of like $500G's, and meet many other qualifications. I read that after the last election when everyone like Robert Redford and Babs were whining about Bush winning the election.

OK, so maybe Grace and others among you will think I'm an a-hole for saying this, but...

Why are you bitter about being an American? If you live in the area affected by Katrina... then I can understand being upset and bitter, I'm sorry about what happened and I plan to donate to the Red Cross, for what it's worth. If you are bitter just because of George "Dubya" Bush and the political situation in the US... then geez, lighten up! You will not get any sympathy from me. If you don't like Bush and the Republicans then sign up with the Democrats (or another party if you like) and change the system from within. Besides, while politics affects everybody, there is so much more about life worth living that should hopefully reduce your bitterness (although of course I don't know your personal situation).

I DETEST the political situation in Canada right now, but I don't let it make me bitter, nor do I talk about leaving the country just because of politics. I love so many other things about Canada and would not want to live anywhere else. I would guess that, deep down, the situation is the same with you, Grace... while you detest the political situation in the US, I would guess you love so much else about your country that it would be hard to really consider living elsewhere.

Well, to clarify, I'm not bitter to be an American..just
a bitter American..I love my country, but don't trust my government.

I was in the 49% who actually used their brains.
I went to the food bank all week to pack food.
I had friends from NOLA here just shaking
their heads - I know NOLA..I LOVE NOLA

I'm bitter, well..okay, not bitter..but damned frustrated and pissed.

We've spent millions on Homeland Security, only to have it fail miserably and result in nothing put finger pointing and 1,000's who have lost their civil liberties because of the name on their driver's liscense..

We've been lied to, while people are killed in droves in Iraq..

It goes on and on, and sometimes, you just need a rest..or at least some good news from our government. But it looks as if I will have to look at the abundance American pride and generosity that is floating our lame government to get me through the news..

Grace, I hate to say it and you surely will not believe me, but the federal government wasn't the entity who dropped the ball with the Katrina response. The debacle begins and ends with NO and the state of LA. The Feds mobilized and responded as fast as any national gov't entity ever will for any disaster.

I am not going to blame 100% on the Feds, but you are
blind if you don't think that they shouldn't take any of the blame.
The buck stops at the top - even Bush admitted that.
Homeland Security dropped the ball - that's the plain truth.

On another not..Did you know that Cheney's Haliburton is going to make 9 Billion (that's a B, not an M) off of the clean up? Even before Bush went down there to pat toddlers heads, they signed the contracts.. :roll:

We'd have to ask the USA to come up and help us. Our military is terribly under-staffed and under-funded. We are simply not equipped to deal with a major disaster.

pride gets us a little closer..
low self-esteem......... well thats just sad man...

regardless of what you may think, canada is just as well equipped to respond to a major disaster as any other nation.. our security services are consistenly considered among the best in the world.... when people speak of the shortcomings of our military, they're speaking of our capacity as an invading force... who do you feel like invading? whats the price of admission into the game?

and in response to the original question... what would happen if canada had its own natural disaster?

we'd cope the same way you are currently coping, but i think we'd have a bit of an easier time... after all, none of our cities are below sea level... especially not ones that are vulnerable to catastrophic tropical cyclones... new orleans has been a disaster waiting to happen for the last 300 years, and its a shame that it finally happened... hopefully lessons will be learned.. natural disasters are never easy to prepare or plan for, but hopefully efforts will be made for the future
