I don't think Gord stating a long-known fact (that New Orleans is indeed sinking) qualifies as Nostradomus-like characteristics.

New Orleans is sinking at a rate of 3 feet per century, approximately 8 times the global average. Gord wasn't predicting anything; he was making a fact-based observation that in light of recent events has become eerily poignant. But it's always been based on a fact.

Sarcasm my brother, note the.................... after I said Nostrodamus.

Oh, ok. So a series of ellipses is now the universal indicator of sarcasm. Ok. Good to know.

Next time i'll just not sarcasm. But who would acctually think that I think Gordie Is Nostrodamus. Some of you guys on here are thread nazi's and seem to complain about way too much going on.

Irony is the use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning. So the title and matter of both New Orleans is sinking or New Orleans is Beat isn't ironic at all. It's coincidence.

I guess we can blame Alanis Morissette's blatant misuse of the word ironic.

It's like a traffic jam/When you're already late
He won the lottery/And died the next day

I guess popular usage is shifting to mean something more along the lines of ironies of fate, or something.

Until then, however, that the Hip have a song called NOIS is coincidence! :lol:

Nah, please use sarcasm as much as you want. I am not trying to police a thread really; I just didn't know you were being sarcastic. Not that I thought you honestly thought Gord has psychic powers or whatever. I just didn't know if you were aware that what Gord is talking about is actually a real-life natural phenomenon. Some people aren't. Anyway, no hard feelings.

Yeah I guess i'm sorry too. I knew NOIS had to do with New Orleans and water but I didnt know that it's acctually sinking. So thanks anyway. I was thinking it was a metaphor like someone is getting down and gordie didnt wanna be pulled in hahah.

I think Alanis takes a lot of unjustified heat for that song. Some of the stuff in it is pretty ironic. I don't agree with your definition above as being the only correct or useful definition (granted, you never said it was). I like this definition: "a state of affairs that appears perversely contrary to what one expects". Something is ironic when it is different or opposite to the expected or intended result, usually in a perverse or humourous way.

10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife is ironic. Imagine your hands are bound with a rope by an assailant. You're struggling to loose your bonds. Your assailant retires for a couple minutes to take a wizz or something. You claw your way over to the kitchen cupboards. All you need is a knife. You open the drawer or cupboard only to find it filled with 10,000 spoons and nary a knife. Your assailant returns and cracks open a yogurt or an ice cream or something and spoons himself a nice big mouthful, waiting for his buddy to show up so he can load the moving van with your worldly possessions, including your spoons-of-the-world collection. Now, Alanis is trying to cram that concept into one line of a 3 minute song. Give her a break.

Won the lottery and died the next day. Same deal. Joe Nobody spends his entire life playing the same numbers, hoping to hit the big jackpot. He lives to be 103, with no medical problems, no mental problems, a miracle of science. What keeps him going? His dream of hitting the numbers. One day, he feels a bit of a chill coming on, and thinks about maybe not heading out in the november drizzle to the corner store. Driven crazy by the notion that if he doesn't play, the numbers might come up, he heads out into the night air. He picks up his ticket and, weakened by the cold, a dose of pneumonia as well. Coughing badly the next morning, he checks his lottery ticket, and realizes he's won. Twenty-four hours later he's in the ICU with a build up of fluid in his lung and an unwitnessed codicil to his will scrawled on a napkin, leaving the money to pneumonia research.

Not even Alanis could squeeze that into four-four time and still produce a radio-friendly single.

Sorry, can't do it, ct. The 10,000 spoons and nary a knife thing isn't irony; it's just bad luck.

Now, if the speaker desperately needed a knife the day after she had given away 10,000 knives because she had never ever used one and never thought she ever would, that would be ironic.

but maybe that's what happened. Also, I don't understand how that's ironic, but mine isn't.

Anyway, my only real point is, there's irony in there somewhere and she's only got one line to sing about it.

Now if the song was only about how 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife is ironic, then she'd need to flesh it out a bit, but since she's singing about a dozen or so situations rich with ironic potential, I think she did okay.

She could have averted a lot of controversy by calling the song "Potentially Ironic".
