Hey all
Well, tomorrow morning around 7 I begin the drive to Thunder Bay, to start my Master's in history, studying the early development of hockey and it's importance to shaping Canadian culture; yes, I get to read about (and watch a lot of) hockey over the next two years and get a degree out of it.
But I'm wondering what everyone's "big move" has been and why they did it. Was it for love, money, or all of the above? I'm excited to go, yet nervous at the same time. I've been to Thunder Bay once and that was two weeks ago to look at places. Before this, I really hadn't been further north than Sudbury, years ago to see an OHL playoff game between the Wolves and the Newmarket Royals (now Sarnia Sting). Needless to say, there's going to be some culture shock, but nothing too bad. Besides, if I really long for the excitment of a big city, Winnipeg is only six hours away, right?
Cheers to everyone here at the Hipbase and previously from the Henhouse. There's no better way to waste time while I should be working than stopping by and reading what everyone has to say. The band, it's music and it's fans have helped me stay sane during one degree; here's hoping it'll keep up during the next.
Cheers
Pat

 Have you ever been here? I would start looking for Option B.
No big moves for me as of yet, I am toying with the idea of relocating somewhere in Canada. My job at CP allows me the opportunity of applying for work across the country, so we'll see. But good luck to you in your degree, Im sure you'll enjoy the learning, History is a passion of mine as well and watching all that hockey should be fun. I hope the move goes smooth, it can be a weird feeling being in a new place, I remember when I was in England by myself for 2 weeks, I got real scared a couple times, it was such a strange feeling being so far from home.
Good Luck Pat! :thumb:
Great topic I wrote a paper for a 4th year history course last fall on a similar topic, much shorter than a masters theses but, it was probable the most interesting topic I had ever researched. Oh and I guess my big move was from Vancouver up to Prince George for university one more year to go

. Good Luck.
Well, if you can consider moving from London (Ont.) to Toronto a big move... then yeah, that was it for me. Not a long move distance-wise... but certainly big in a lot of other ways, considering I was not only moving to take a new job, but for the first time ever moving out of my parents' house. That was nearly 7 years ago now... man a lot has changed since then.
I guess my big move (albeit temporarily...maybe) has been from the bright lights of Milwaukee, Wisconsin to the small town confines of Wasilla, Alaska, which is about 45 miles north of Anchorage. It's been an interesting experience so far, the beer up here is absolutely amazing, the people can be quite eccentric and the scenery is absolutely breath-taking..and I havent been to Denali yet! I moved up here after my dad passed away suddenly to help my mom and so far it's been quite an experience. I might be staying up here for a year or more depending on when i can finish up my degree in international relations and get a job in the Department of Homeland Security up here. I'm looking forward to the summer but dreading the long cold nights of a sub-arctic winter *brrr*

j-monster, I didnt know you were a London man? Drop me a line next time your in the Forest City we can get a beer.
Cambridge, Ontario to Vancouver to do my MBA (and some skiing).
Vancouver to Oakville for a promotion (worked in Toronto, did the GO Train thing).
Oakville to Calgary after the wife and I decided the commute was going to be too much for a young family.
Hopefully we stay here for a few years.

LK, check your e-mail.
Well as I said before I recently (in May) moved from samll town Ontario to medium town America. I went from Paris (between London and Hamilton) Ontario, to now Yuba City California. I basically moved here for a good job as a nurse, but I also wanted to travel around while I was young.
It is weird, Canada and America are so similar, yet there are a lot of subtle differences...like you can only buy milk in jugs here, no plasitc bags, kraft dinner tastes funny here...no becel margarine (so far all the butter substitutes have been kinda gross)...you can buy beer and liquor pretty much anywhere here..and its pretty damn cheap too!
and if it wasnt for cbc.ca I would not watch any news...I thought CNN was bad before I left Canada...Fox news gives me chest pains at times...but I htink thats another topic all together...
anyway thats my big move!
~Will (great topic btw)

As far as I can tell milk in bags is an Ontario thing, not a Canada thing. Jugs are more popular here in Alberta and in BC. Hell, I don't even think they saell milk in bags out here.
Personally, I find milk in bags annoying. It is such a pain in the arse to have to change bags every friggin day.

Sudbury vs. the Newmarket Royals!!! Man that's going waaaaay back....back to the Glen Murray, Mike Peca and Tiger Chittaroni days for the Wolves. Thanks for the flashback.
The biggest move for me was from Sudbury to Hot Springs, Virginia to work at The Homestead, a gorgeous golf resort in the forests of the Alleghany Mountains. I was 19 when I moved out there and like any 19 year old I never appreciated just how great I had it. I'll probably never work in such a beautiful place again, nor will I again have access to 3 of the nicest golf courses you can possibly imagine. I guess that's part of the learning process.
Enjoy your time in T Bay...make sure to pack lots of long johns.
Goulet!!!
Hey good luck in Thunder Bay! That was my big move too, I moved up to go to Lakehead..................man that seems like an eternity ago........lol
Anyways, T-Bay is a fantastic place, I loved it up there, probably the best years of my life.
Have a great time and enjoy it, make sure you have a few beers at "The Outpost" for me!!
Hip related, I remmber so perfectly buying "Day For Night" at a record store in the T-bay mall and sitting out front of the university library opening the case to make sure the two songs (Nautical Disaster and Thugs) that I heard during Another Roadside Attraction were on it! Didn't have a walkman, had to wait until I got home to listen to it..........

My move is only temporary, but for my senior year at Syracuse I hauled all my earthly posessions from Wilmington DE, to Syracuse, NY. So...I suppose it was for education. Living in an attic apartment is lots of fun...really...especially when attempting to fit overstuff furniture through door frames I can almost hit my head on (I'm only 5'4"). My roommate and I are still in the organization phases, but all is going well. I have a feeling the next more will be for love, rather than knowledge.
