It's funny, I remember him making some derogatory comments towards the Hip a few years back, and then a couple interviews later he sort of back-tracked and talked about how cool he thought they were and how brilliant Gord Downie's lyrics are. Next thing you know he's opening for them in Kingston for the Across the Causeway show. My guess is that somewhere along the line he actually met them and discovered what a great bunch of guys they were, hence his sudden change of heart.
I remember sometime around Music @ Work Matt Good accused The Hip's label of inflating record sales for whatever reason. The whole thing didn't really make sense and I remember Johnny Fay replying in an interview for The Sun newspapers is that he "doesn't know Matt Good from a hole in the ground" which I thought was pretty funny.

Apparently the Hip don't know much about Good. When talking about the Kingston show, Gord Sinclair listed who would be playing and he said Matt Good is an excellent NEW artist from Vancouver. I guess Sinclair didn't hear his previous albums.

if only that was true...i had a meeting with my boss the other day, and his first words were.."way to sell the format steve"...due to my comments about how much they suck..although to his credit, he said he didn't mind as it shows i'm a "real person"....and i do get quite a few calls thanking me for speaking the truth...

That's good of your boss to realize that... I'm sure other people would tell you to keep your comments re: Nickelcrap to yourself, which would suck.

I think the exact quote was "I don't know Matt Good from a bar of soap," which I think is even funnier.
After he opened at the Across the Causeway show I said to a friend that Good once tackled the Hip but he just bounced off. And apparently he either changed his mind or decided he was wasting his energy trying to pick a fight with a band that refused to engage. As our mothers all told us, "Just ignore that bully and he'll get bored and leave you alone." Would that the strategy worked this well on the playground!
